Did any of our forumites attend Smt. Sowmya's thematic concert last night for the Jaya TV series? A relative of mine has been raving about a "magnum opus performance" that encompassed the evolution of Tamil Isai from Silappadikaram times to contemporary composers. She also says it was comparable in scope to last year's breathtaking Nandanar performance from Sowmya. I'm curious to hear from any of our learned forumites who might have attended...

This is not an Appar Tevaram but the famous mAlai mARRuttirupadhigam (mAlai mARRu - Tamil for Palindrome)
composed by TiruGnanasambandhar. A very nice list and good raga choices.

ramanathan, will Carnatica be releasing this CD?

By the way, it's been a long time since Carnatica had new releases (the last CDs were the SSI specials back in July). Hope you have a huge new crop in time for the season...

My mistake, entirely! Have made the correction in the list. Thanks, vidya.

gn.sn42, this was not a Carnatica programme at all. It is part of the Jaya TV Margazhi Utsavam conducted by Maximum Media. Excerpts will be telecast as always, later this month on Jaya TV.

Are you sure? Unless my memory is failing me, I think Sowmya described it as an Appar composition.

Thanks, ramanathan, but as others have pointed out, it will be great to have this available on CD or DVD. Could you lean on Maximum Media to release this, or perhaps negotiate to obtain Carnatica the CD rights?

Count me in as another votary for a CD/DVD release of this concert. I heard this performance live and was floored by the scope of the presentation. There are many artistes with the scholarship to take on such a theme, but very few that can effectively articulate their thoughts (both verbal & musical) and carry rasikas along. Sowmya succeeded spectacularly in that respect. An effective communicator in addition to being a fine musician. Very much a worthy inheritor of her guru's mantle, whose delightful lec-dem concerts I have heard in Kerala (he used to be a regular feature at the annual Tulasivanam festival in Trivadrum). For those of you who missed the live performance, be sure to tune in to the TV excerpts and hope that the concert will be released commercially!

It would be definitely fabulous to have this in a DVD. I saw the nandanaar from last year in you tube and as somebody rightly pointed out, it definitely was not complete. For those of us rasikas who live outside India, DVD releases definitely help immensely.

After watching the excerpts of this wonderful performance last night on TV, I have evn greater regrets about not attending the live show :( Such vidwat, such articulation.... an artiste with lots of guru kataksham & guru bhakti. She has done real justice to the concept of 'thematic concert' year after year. I have to support all the requests made by others to somehow bring this out as a CD/DVD

Hi,

I watched the telecast yesterday. It was a lec-dem show. I think MMU is becoming a nice blend of concerts, bhakthi sangeetham and lec-dem. Thanks to Subasree
Thanikasalam and the artists who are innovative about their presentation. For people like me who never learnt CM , she looked like a mucicologist. I leave it to others to comment. Lots of information ( some went over my head).
Some facts like most Appar songs are sung in Bairavi etc.
And the way she answered the mathematics in CM, it was cracker of an explanation using calculus (time differential).
ie d/dt[sangathi] = higher , how it looks nice etc. Soumya proved that she is an engineer too.

I too caught part of the program this morning and agree that it was excellent. But I missed this calculus part you refer to, rajaglan... Can you explain?

I also wish that the complete program be made available in a DVD. Sowmya is indeed an effective muusicologist who wears the mantle of her famous Guru quite well. She seamlessly passes from a teacher to a performer making every point practically demonstrated. She exudes confidence which makes her presentation 'professorial'. She has indeed given a taste of the grandeur and hoariness of 'Tamizh isai' which is an eyeopener for those who beliieve that CM started only with the Trinity :) As Newwton once stated, the Trinity stepped on the nameless shoulders of those Giants to reach the heights of CM. lest we forget. CM is the joint heritage of all of us in South India and we should all encourage investigators to sink in that CM ocean deep to bring out thhe pearls just like Sowmya has done as a pioneer. Hats off!

More I read your posts, i think u seem to be more of a strong believer that CM started with the Trinity. And you seem to kindle a controversy upon every opportunity that you get. What is the need for such comment in this thread!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is now available (only partly unfortunately) on youtube! Sowmya has proved that she is not just another carnatic musician trying to get a name in the concert platform. She has so much more to offer than any other musician i have ever heard in the current generation, added with her humble nature, devotion to her guru and her beautiful voice. She has inherited so much from her guru whom she calls a walking encylopedia.. I think she is getting there too!

Hi,

It was a very simple demo. She sang a sangathi slow and again sang the same sangathi at the usual (higher speed) and showed how it sounds good. So basically it means sangathi has to be delivered at a rate (or time at the denominator).
