Chennai Fine Arts had organised a book release--Geeta Sundaram--compositions of Dr.B.M.Sundaram. While most of us know Shri BMS as a great musicologist, it was a revelation that he is a great composer too! The function was presided over by his guru Dr.M.Balamurali Krishna and Vidwan Shri GS Mani, a close friend of his. They spoke about different aspects of BMS.
Smt. Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam presented a concert of his compositions. She had Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi, Kallidaikurichi Sivakumar and Ramanuja(?) on morsing.
The concert started with a very demanding varnam in Raga Puthrika, also known as Niroshtha. It was followed by another varnam in Suddha Danyasi in Ata Tala with some intricate laya details....
It was very interesting to hear some new ragas like Raviswarupini, Kalika and Soujanya ( this incidentally is the same as Lavangi!)
Must have taken a lot of hard work for the singer to present the songs with such ease:D
Many Vidwans were present-- Smt. Suguna Purushothaman, Shri AK Palanivel, Shri S Rajam among others.
