After coming across a mention of the song in the TMK thread, I felt the need to listen to an expansive Mari Mari Ninne and chose BMK's version since his was the only version that had all the sangathis. I've been listening to it at least twice or thrice a day for the past week and have been in awe of the epic song. The raga is brought out in its full glory and it's a stupendous rendition by BMK, at least in my book. As I listened to it again for the umpteenth time yesterday, it struck me that if I was put in a situation where I could listen to just one song before I died or before the world ended, I'd without hesitation choose Mari Mari Ninne by BMK. I wish I could post the recording here, but unfortunately it's a commercial recording (HMV - Kamboji Krithis by BMK).

So, what would your final song be?

I might just go in for Mari mari ninne as well....Alathoor's version. TMK comes close though. Haven't heard BMK....

Good thread shripathi. Let us wonder aloud when our fellow members in Chennai are sabha-hopping..

That will be tough, if the choice is limited to 1.

These are not laminated, so for now I will have to go with 'enati nomu palamu' by MSS or 'elavathara' by NCV.

Interesting question! My choice is probably Intha Sowkhyamaninne by KVN (right now anyhow, though it would be preferable not to die at this age).

The wish, whatever it is, would come sooner to me than it would to all of you--considering my age. Hope I make sure that I am thinking of that particular deity whose name occurs in that particular song or rAgA which I choose to hear at that particular moment, and that I do not expire in any particular place where the noise of the traffic drowns the playing of the song and any distant trumpets, if there are going to be any...

I hope Prashanth is looking the other way round.Just yesterday I was telling him it would be Raag Yaman -or atleast Jamboopathe by VijaySiva with RK Sriramkumar on the violin.
Interestingly , it was the same question

:)
Kji - I'm looking right at you! But my answer has changed too [and am sure it will keep changing until the day the bell finally tolls :-)] - vadAnyESwaram by SSI. If 'lights out' can be declared after 'paSupatim jnAnAmbikApatim' that would be ideal.

If I can go peacefully with my family around me and any of these artistes: KVN / MSS / DKP / DKJ / MDR / Nedunuri / SSI / LGJ / Vedavalli Amma / Vijay Siva playing in the background, I will consider myself fortunate.

No Varugalamo yet? ;-)

A few of my other choices have already been mentioned. Jambupathe by Vijay Siva, Giripai by MDR.

Interesting topic..

Shri.Tiger Varadachariar passed away hearing my father's 'Entara' in Harikambhodhi.

My personal choice would be my father's Ksheera Sagara Shayana (Devagandhari) or his Giripai (Sahana) or even KVN mama's Muruga (Saveri) or Inta Sowkya (Kapi).

Shripathi, Dhanavendra had listed Varugalamo and I was toying with it as well. I'm surprised there are no calls for MMI's Meenakshi Memudam or his Sukhi Evaro.

It would be the raga Surutti ... any krithi is fine (even an alapana) ... Surutti is a great way to end (even begin) a concert and also take away my last breath.

I will go for a really elaborate kAmbhOji followed by O Ranga Sayee rendered by TNS - preferably the same version I heard from him at Sri Parthasarathi Sabha two seasons ago!

I will listen to KVNs Thyagaraja yoga vaibhavam ( anandha bhairavi) and / or Varugalamo ( manji) and after that , the tambura ( preferably a perfectly tuned Hindusthani tambura sruthi ) should go on and on and on ................

MDR has so many renditions of mOkshamu galadhaa. The one where he starts with the anupallavi line 'sAkSAtkAra'. I guess I might also find the answer to the song's question soon after that as well.

If I am allowed choices, my first would be Manakkal's tODi 'Thaye yasoda' which he sang for over three hours holding up the deity and a spell-bound TNR 60 years ago which is only recorded in my memory. The other is VVS's entaveDuko which is fortunately available in a short vinyl record which is a cherished treasure for me. Finally it is the Giripai of MDR (as Arun has picked) which brings tears every time I hear....

For me it will be a nice rendering of
'jananee ninnu vinaa'-reetigowLai and
'kamalAmbikE'-todi

In lighter vein,
I will sing to HIM(Yamadharmraja) -'inDru pOy nALaivArAi'

One last time to GNB's sparkling Brocheva (kamas)
Definately Musiri's soulful rendition of Evari Maate
Madurai Somu's ninaikaathe neram illai
KVN's Varugalamo
MMI eppo varuvaro
& Seerkazhi Govindarajan's version of Samarasam Ulavum

Actually ... there are so many more...its impossible to choose!!!

Dasharathe in Thodi by Araikudi.

Coolji, really moving words (Only if I could find the right words to describe.....)

1. tAnam by Semmangudi mAma preferably in bhairavi
2. ithavu mAta neraval and swaras of Madurai mani in kApi nArayani
3. And finally when I am pavaMA nA Sleeping :(
......................
......................
.........................

brindAvana SArangA rAga alApanai preferably by maharAjapuram SanthAnam. All my life I had madhyamAvati or shuruTTi or sowrAstram in the end , let me atleast the rAgam that I love the most.

I too have a long list. Some of them are:

1. SSI - amba kAmaAkshi (with lalgudi) - neraval and swarams are so sweet. Lalgudi's last swaram brings tears.
2. SSI - enduku nirdaya and srirAmam (nanganallur anjaneyar temple concert?? A video of this was going around during sangeetham days. I wish someone would help me with this lost treasure). The accompaniment of VVS and the reactions of MSS are added bonuses.
3. SSI - deva deva kalayAmithE (a commercial recording with L Shankar) - Neraval and swarams again
4. SSI - srI vEnkatagirIsam. Lalgudi' reply is so brilliant.
5. KVN (for a change :) ) - ennEramum undhan and jagadOdhAranA from a commercial recording.

A great selection of songs from all--only thing is, you all have a looong way to go before you realize your wishes. We seniors will be happy if there is a sweet song to hear and a song in our hearts when we leave. As you grow older, you realize that a decent departure is fine enough.

rshankar - I was contemplating between vandE vAsudEvam of MS, mAyanai mannu (5th thiruppAvai) of ARI and Adivarahana cheluvapAda (purandaradAsaru dEvaranAmA) by TMK. All the three are in SrI rAgam and will be very pleasent to hear in viLamba kAla. The only reason which made me choose vandE vAsudEvam was it was sung by MS. If there was a recording of MS singing the SrIrAga tiruppAvai, I would have definitely chosen that. We only have one mAlE maNivanna recording of MS and no more tiruppAvai sung by her. :)

arasi - The decent departure comment is very true. I'm reminded of periyAzhvAr's appozhudaikku ippozudEy sollivaitEn arangamAnagaruLAnE and tiruppanRi nAyanAr's verse from varAha purANam "aham smarAmi madbhaktham nayAmi paramAngatim". If we are able to get his name even once that would be itself an significant achievement as dAsaravAru sang "antya kAladalli chitnisO hAkE nArAyaNA ninna nAmada smaranEya".
Yes my mother was telling me about the grand opening of the library. My uncle had worked had for almost 3 decades in bringing this collection together. You should read that one too in V Sriram's article. I'll visit the library when I'm there. I'm also sad that I'll miss the music season this time and probably the next time too :(. I'm planning to be in the summer next year. As of this becos of research! :(

Except of mAlE maNivaNNA in kuntalavarALI, I dont know of any other thiruppAvai recordings of MS. May be our friend, Navaneet Venkatesan (student of Smt Radha Vishvanathan) can throw some light.
