Sanjay Subrahmanyan, Nadha Inbam concert on 15th Dec

Chakravaham JalajAkshi varnam
NagasvarAvali - Shiva Chidambarame, brief swarams
Darbar - RamAbhi RamA, Elaborate AlApanA
ChAyA Tharangini - Idhara Deivamula
Kalyani - Elaborate AlApana, Vasu Deva eni, N,S
Brindavana Saranga - Soundara Rajam
Bowli - Elaborate AlApanA, Parvathi NayakA, S
Thani
Atana - RA RA
Slokam - VarAli, Desh followed by Govardana Giri
Chenjuruti - Pittam Theliya
Mangalam

The concert faithfully adhered to the tenets of a serious classical presentation from ChakravAham to Chenjurutti.
Chakravaham opened the program with a lively gait
Darbar raga alapana exposing the raga in all its shades, time-tested pidis and intertwined sancharas, lingering longer on bhava laden phrases and kaarvais with a stream of flowing prayogas in his vibrant voice was a journey of pure classical music rich in tradition. The nuanced delivery of "RamAbhi RAmA" rang in melody with precisely enunciated notes and characteristic gamakas.
ChAyA tharangini was portrayed with panache bringing out its raga lakshana to the fore with some exquisite prayogas.
In the detailed alapana of KalyAni, Sanjay delineated the raga by singing the notes from the lower and middle registers, continuing with penetrating passion in tara sthayi lingering on shadjamam true to the identity of the krithi, glided through its subtle sancharas by bringing out it details in every turn of the raga before singing the time-honored composition `Vasu Deva Eni' by Saint Thyagaraja that had a GNBish regal and refreshing bearing with melody and laya perfection. The niraval in Vasu deva eni was exemplary with emotion filled sancharas. The sparkle in the raga alapana in telling sancharas brimming with aesthetic finesse was the high light of the program. After this overwhelmingly energetic piece came as a vilambakala interlude Soundara Rajam.
With its melodic appeal - Brindavana Saranga - it was a resounding Soundara Rajam almost all the way mesmerizing the listeners.
The evening’s melody was the emotionally pregnant raga Bowli, a happy blend of melody and spontaneity with his slow swaraprastara contouring the raga was a soulful rhythmic display. He poured his soul into the immortal kriti Parvathi NayakA. The quintessence of the raga was brought through his madhyama kala swaras with a controlled power and stunning accuracy. It was studded with melodic prayogas in the chowka kala in the rendering of the composition and the flowing sarvalaghu swaras enhanced by his earnest enunciation.
In the slokam he skilfully sang melodies together in varAli, Desh, and Dharbari KanadA drenched with bhava.
Pittam theliya in Chenchurutti was presented in its pristine form.
He did shake the chord of many listeners with his simply organic melody.

Kedharam,
A super review. It makes those who were in Chennai regret their not being there and those who live far far away(the likes of CML) drool but to hear about such a treat is a pleasure in itself for them. I was hoping to hear a kalyANi of his this season, but he might not sing one in any of the concerts I attend.
His rAmAbhirAmA and soundararAjam are classics. Do you recall the viruttam lines?
While there are many rAgAs in which I like to hear Sanjay sing, I would like to hear him sing yadukulakhAmbOji. Even if it is not my favorite kruti in that rAgA, I would be happy...

Erode 14 - He was accompanied by HK Venkatram on the violin and Thanjavur Murugabhoopathy on the mridangam.

I actually attended the concert and even wrote out a mini recap ( I did not deem it fit that I write a review on such a great concert!). One of the best ever Sanjay concerts I have attended live. The Kalyani was just out of the world and a totally different Kalyani with the so many variations ... Soundararajam literally transported us into total bliss....i wud not have been surprised to see " NArayana" himself at the concert esp the way he sang out to Govinda in Govardhana giridhara.

Arasiji - I will try to reproduce the viruttam lines ..have written it down i think.

Nice review and recap of the concert. I have been listening to old Sanjayji's katcheri recordings available on sangeethapriya.org. Is there an audio available for this concert, would lov to hear it.

Thanks
Aruna

Charsur may come out with his recording. They have the copyrights for all concerts there this season. Let's wait for this truly memorable simlpy organic melody.
