Not your standard dance, very contemporary, self-taught, self-created. Winners, 2009
[ I posted two other videos of this group in the Lounge under Watch this Amazing Show. Amazing indeed! ]

Re: interesting links to watch
One can only hope. The video was from 2008 so quite recent (as was the review I think). Of course, if this standard was good enough to bag the Nritya Choodamani from Krishna Gana Sabha, is there really any incentive to improve??madhan wrote: Even Ms.Rupa Srikanth in her review on Ms.Narthaki nataraj says "It was Narthaki’s expressive strength that won her audience over. The nritta was undemanding, yet it was not well-finished. The dancer should work on improving her fitness and the clarity of the steps. She should work on becoming an all-rounder. " But both the video and the review are quite old.. She has probably improved now..!

[quote="ksl"]Here is my article in narthaki which touched on the greatness of so called great artists.
http://www.narthaki.com/info/articles/art274.html
Nice article ksl! Are u working on any new ones?
As for Balasaraswati, I really really wish we had some archival footage of her in her younger days. I feel like by the time the Krishna Nee Begane footage was shot she was already on the greatness pedestal so as I mentioned in an earlier post, everyone feels compelled to say it was great. If we judge today's "greats" by how they dance today, I don't think we can come away with a very favorable impression. Contrast their performances today with those from their prime. It was the performances from their prime that put them on the greatness pedestal. I personally don't have a problem with them staying on the pedestal. But, I think a truly great dancer should have enough self-awareness and humility to realize when the quality of their art starts to slip. Wishful thinking, I know.

who is this dancer and who is the choreographer and what song is this? Never heard it before. Plus its a very difficult piece to conceive considering she plays ball almost 75% of the song!! And never does she repeat herself. I am intrigued.

Good article ksl. There has to be a confluence of both the music and the dance for the performance to be effective. Sometimes watching Bharatanatyam to non-typical music just leaves me feeling empty. I know that some Bharatanatyam dancers are experimenting with using non-traditional music in an effort to reach out to a broader audience. I would like to hear from some of these dancers as to their motivations and whether they feel their efforts are successful.ksl wrote:@kannagi: My 2nd article has been on narthaki for about a month now. Utterly delightful the ball bouncing-play with a never a repeat move as you say.

Does anyone have the video of viralimalai kuravanji? The famous dance drama by Dr.Padma Subrahmanyam, Smt.Chitra Viswesvaran and Prof.Sudharani Raghupathy that was aired on Doordarshan a few years ago? I spoke to Doordarshan people in a book fair couple of years back and they told me that the video is in some format that cannot be converted to a viewable format in today's devices..! Now that i found rasikas, i thought i could ask if someone has their old VHS tapes of the show..!!

ksl, Lakshman-ji has given the lyrics on sahitya. Tilang it is. So the composer is Thirikooda Rasappa Kavirayar, song is vasanthavalli pandhadithal. The kutraala kuravani must be a larger drama? where this vasanthavalli pandhadithal piece is a part.ksl wrote:@SP: Someone on fb told me this about the piece "kutraala kuravanji by Thirikoodarasappa kavi vasanthavalli pandhadithal. I'd like to see and know that's it's you ksl -- you seem to write a lot on dance. I may have missed what others may already know of you since I am fairly new to rasikas. Now, if you can give some links without being so cagey or pricey? Thanks.
On finding dancers that interest me, I occasionally stumble on something or the other on my own.

That was very nice to watch - what the piece and who is the composer ? And who is your guru ? Are you US based/India based.
Can you give other links - thanks.
Not to worry, just wanted to see your performances. Your opinions are your own and separate, as you say.

That's sneaky. You responded to a direct request from me for your videos by throwing in a 'link for sharing some other' with a note to me below the link, so I was to "guess" this was of another person? Thanks!ksl wrote:Oh! Thats not me. I just liked her so shared it with everyone.

Too bad you don't want share your links.

I have a hard time seeing rolling on the floor to cover music space translate as well as classical arts do. Obviously Ms. Anita Ratnam doesnt share my opinion. The dancer in this video is undoubtedly good enough. I would love to know general opinon of what rasikas think is the future here:

A vintage interview of Smt.Sudharani Ragupathy, The videos include clips of Sudha madam performing an abinaya piece (Keliyaai Ponadhadi) in her classroom, also an excerpt from the Varnam "Maaye Mayan Sodariye" by Madurai N Krishnan, and a small extract from the Bramha Sandhi Kautvam. ENJOY : )

@ksl - are you asking what we think of the future of this style of dance or whether is this the future of Bharatanatyam/classical dance? Most of the movements in the video are from the Contemporary style of dance - not to be confused with dancing to contemporary themes or Anita Ratnam's neo-Bharatham etc. Contemporary dance has its own very identifiable dance vocabulary - seems to me almost like deconstructed/broken form of Western classical ballet. You will see the same/similar movements in most Contemporary dance choreography. I don't have any issue with dancers using traditional based Indian music for Contemporary dance as long as it is not called Bharatanatyam/Indian classical dance etc.ksl wrote:I have a hard time seeing rolling on the floor to cover music space translate as well as classical arts do. dear friends...nice contemporary dance but believe me dancing with contemporary style not as divine as pure bharatanatyam style...
we haven't fully discover bharata's natya shastra which is offer such large scope to expend and create more n more creative things in dance.
for an example bharata described roughly about 20 types of leg movements n how far we realize bout it n at the same time how many of this leg movements are in practice rite now?
i feel really really feel bad and disappointed when thinking bout certain dancers n teachers who willing to spend their precious time to create such a "new" bharatanatyam style which is not bharatanatyam at all. 1st of all we must be proud with natya shastra n go through at least once to understand wat is bharatanatyam all about.... bharata already made a guide so just follow it...
dont mess bharatanatyam with limited knowledge n plz retain the purity of the dance cause it is make us different, from others..

I believe that Contemporary dance has a place in India as it does in many countries. But, I doubt it will replace the traditional forms. It does bug me that AR seems to have the West is Best attitude these days when it comes to dance in India. Part of the problem with Contemporary dance is that it is very introspective and sometimes, self-indulgent. Unfortunately, I have found that unless the context of the performance is explained, my viewing experience is limited to appreciating the movements and not any deeper.ksl wrote:@kannagi: I was referring to this article where AR talks of contemporary dancers as ones she has high hopes for.

How do you guys feel about this trikala jathi? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8-mTTMhYQc
I think its ~innovative and clever, but honesty, its difficult to keep up with. It lacks that sort of build up that a traditional trikala theermanam has. Not a fan of the nattuvanar's intonation either. And its a total mismatch with the sweetness of the pallavi line. The jathi is simply too aggressive in my opinion.
Thoughts?

goes on to show
1.why female dance gurus should be careful when they want to be as impactful as a male nattuvanar in reciting jathis. the recitation is bothersome in it's desire to sound like a nattuvanar.
2. how what Priyadarshini govind and a lot of other famous dancers do needs a lot of aesthetic sensitivity and cant be blindly followed to give disastrous results.
3. and that an om-namah-shivayah chanting is more appropriate for something where the nayika is not asking the sakhi to ask the Lord to come but for something more like the nattukurinji varnam. How dance teachers loose the big picture of keeping rasanubhava intact in pursuit of latest (in this case PG's) trends.

I don't know if Shoba Narayanan has made an appearance in this thread before.
Footwork could be improved, but I love her precision and grace. Just check out the completeness of the theermanam adavu. Very good stage presence as well.

I gotta admit, I kinda like the influence of her classical ballet training.

It feels as if the nattuvanar in the trikala jathi is trying be a little seductive loll, and i agree totally does not fit into a nayika based varnam.

@ Ardhanariswar: Heres another dancer who is trained in modern dance
Rukmini Vijayakumar.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ez0Y3pGcG4w (the audio is much faster than the video)
her dancing has improved a lot since this video. But again, maybe its wrong to compare based on a presentatino where she is only taking poses vs. a traditional margam where she is doing some adavus:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mn89QBYS8Ys
Shes remarkably fine in postures and acting though.

anirudhdha knight at Kalakshetra!!! OMG!!! I know Leela Samson was opening up kalakshetra for everyone but....OMG!!!
1. He is always in Kurta Pajama. Even in a concert in my city, he was in Kurta Pajama. What on earth??
2. what on earth???
3. Seriously madhan? I dont think even people from old school will like this. Unless by old school u mean people who just manage to successfully stomp at the right mridangam cues. He even managed to loose himself in that one thing at 3.14 teermanam.
4. Someone please tell me he doesnt have a gajra (a strand of flowers) on his right hand.
You know, Anirudhdha earlier gave a speech whose link i posted earlier that everytime he sees Balammas tapes, he learns something new. Everytime i see his video, I notice something completely new that i didnt notice before too!
