Alarmel Valli Interview. She is very correct in saying a lot of choreographies now a days do not emphasize of the difficult but essential Natyarambham and include a lot of diagonal movements which are both easy and derived from other form of dances.

Yes.. Madhu and Kaitabha are born from the earwax of Vishnu. Vishnu kills them and makes earth from their skin. This is the story I was told and watched in plays/yaksha ganas when I was a kid.

I didn't watch Padma Subramaniam's video. But according to the story I was told - Raktha (meaning blood) beeja (meaning seed) asura was in the court of two Asura kings called Shumbha and Nishumbha. They send him to fight Devi when she refuses to marry one of them. Every time his blood is spilled onto the floor several new Raktha beejasuras are born. So Devi becomes Raktheswari and covers the earth with her tongue. When Raktha beeja's blood spills it spills onto the tounge and never touches the floor thus stopping new Raktha beejas from forming. And devi kills him in the fight.

KSL - Thank you for that lovely clip. As I said in my review of her performance, I love to watch and hear her speak almost as much as I enjoy her dancing! She is so elegantly eloquent. Here is to wishing her many, many more years of creating 'modern/contemporary poetry'!

Hi,

Thanks for the link which had Ms. Alarmel Valli's interview. It was very good.
She spoke about her teacher who had vast knowledge and how much she gained being his student. She is indeed blessed.

When you notice, there are too many dancers who run dance schools. They may be people with lots of knowledge which they gained from their gurus. But tell me how many dancers actually have time to share this with their disciples now? They are so busy performing programs are organising some programs that they do not find time to even handle class.

Almost all teachers these days have staff members who teach dance for the students. So where is the question of the main teacher coming in picture here? They are busy and handle classes mainly for their senior students. I know of teachers who may not be so popular but still have staff teacher to teach for the students. It is because they have too many students and the teacher is busy with other work and may not find time to teach. She teaches only her senior students.

So where is the question of the teacher sharing her knowledge comes in picture here. She may share it with only her senior students.

I think only in Kalashetra they give importance to all this(which is so good and i think the students are very lucky) and they learn so much theory. Not all dance school does all this.

Infact I know of one of my friends who learnt dance for more then 18years and is not comfortable with lot of technical terms in bharatnatyam. Infact her guru is a very famous guru.

So I think people like Alarmel valli was lucky to be under wonderful guru. In the present generation many of us have to learn lot of things by reading a lot. I think good that we have forums like this(which is wonderful and many of us like me learn a lot) and i am sure we do a lot of search on the internet to enrich our knowledge.

I think rasikas forum is a wonderful and very informative site and people like Shankar, KSL and many others are very knowledgable and share a lot with everyone(which many people don't do).

Thanks for helping us out with our queries and sharing your ideas and knowledge with us.

This is just my view and not meant to hurt anybody.

rshankar, The kathak in the second link is indeed beautiful. Looks a bit simpler to watch than bharatha natyam.

I did not know kathak absorbed dance elements from persian dance. So there was a parallel absorption in dance similar to music? Interesting. May be, that element of revolving/rotating in place is such an import. Just wild speculation.

VK, as I understand it, when kathak - (derived from 'kathakas' - wandering ministrels who sang, and more importantly, danced the tales of krishNa and his beautiful rAdhA) moved to the mughal courts, the religious aspects were shorn and the 'picturesque' elements of the nRtta were preserved and heightened, and it was performed to the SAyiri (poetry) of the court poets - that is how the Persian influence came in. The lightning fast 'pirouettes' are probably one such aspect that was chosen to be heightened. Anyway, way back when, in one of the SPICMACAY lec-dems, we were told that there were 2 streams of kathak - a mughlai kathak, and Hindu kathak - I do not remember much more. Other, more knowledgeable members can elaborate.

I think there are three major gharanas (schools) in kathak. Banaras, Lucknow and Jaipur. Jaipur gharanas are the ones that wear a blouse, dupatta and a ghagra (skirt) like hindus used to originally wear. You can tell the other two apart as i think they wear salwars as made famous in courtrooms and other infamous places. Lucknow gharana i think is known for most of the shayari based and courtroom based showy dance where there is a lot of ada (attitude) adn nazakat (feminism) involved understandably. Jaipur gharana i understand is more grounded in technique and primarily deals with rigourous footwork. I think the girl in this video says shes from Jaipur (I ahve no idea why she is wearing a bharatanatyam blouse with a ghagra though). I have watched interviews of this dancer i like from jaipur gharana called Monisha Nayak on webindia123.com. I will post the interview here and you can check her youtube videos out. I think she is really sweet in the way she talks

I need some help understanding this - if this SlOka describes navarasa exhibited/experienced by Siva, I can't follow the logic of some of the descriptors used. I think the navarasa shloka on Rama describes the bhavas he experienced. So it was written as first hand episodes from his life where he might have felt them.

This one feels more like describing how shiva's form in itself is a manifestation of/evokes the navarasas in the bhaktas/audience (could include parvati but i dont get any indication in the sahitya). So it is a third hand experience and written more based on symbolism in his form.

So bhikshapatra evokes compassion because when you give bhiksha on seeing the patra, you do it also in part of compassion...so bhikashapatra stands for karuna..and karuna has a lot of shades...pathos being one of them...compassion arises out of pathos

his third eye is symbolic of/stands for raudra..
nandi evokes/symbolises laughter
the trishula evokes/symbolises veera and so on..

i have a question: does astihare (is that what they are singing) mean runda maala... because the dancers didnt show a runda maala.. I thought they meant cemetery..(random guess)

@rshankar: I think Mohanasudha when she dances on the pot is doing kuchipudi..for her songs are mostly tarangams famous in kuchipudi...shes from andhra..and usually there, kids learn both bharatanatyam and kuchipudi.

I was under the impression that perani natyam (dancing on pot) was not part of traditional bharatanatyam but obviously sheel unnikrishnans melattur style seems to incorporate them
