Re: GLOBAL RASIKAS MEET DURING DECEMBER 2010.

Post by arasi »

In the spirit which moved rasikAs to come together yesterday, I cannot help saying this: I was very happy to meet old and new rasikAs. I had to leave early because of other commitments. How I wish I had met the late-comers and had heard everyone speak!
Srinidhi's singing was beautiful--bless her! Thanks to all the members who worked hard to make this happen. It was nice to have performers too among us--a quartet of violinists and father and guru of his outstanding family and of others. They took time to come and join us. This means, Rasikas.org is respected among musicians as well. We are true rasikAs who care about CM and its growth, and several among us are experts in music as well as in their own fields which is what makes us special.
Not at all meaning to sound old, preachy or condescending, let me quote bhArati: nammil oTRumai nIngil anaivarkkum tAzhvE. NanRidu tErndiDal vENDum, inda gnAnam vandAl pin namakkedu vENDum!

With goodwill towards all and malice towards none--are inspiring words. That's what has kept me very happy, being a member here where I learn all the time. I cannot help being old! If I'm an optimist, I cannot help it either--even though being one may come across to a few as unrealistic. If peace is a desirable thing, wanting to keep it among us is also essential, I think.
Back to the meeting yesterday, thanks to all who made it happen, had worked hard, and to all those who were there--and most of all, to little Srinidhi who signifies hope for CM among the young!

Punrvasu,
I'm not sure if this was mentioned before: your poem was read out beautifully by Vishnu and was presented to Govindan, framed ;)

I hope I am not posting something that can be construed as impertinent.

I am sorry and perturbed over the happenings in our forum as everybody else.. We forget we are being watched by others who are likely be gleaming.

A moderator is one who is supposed to moderate different views –conflicting ones without offending any. He should not be an instrument to provide or create dissatisfaction among members. Words and actions should be seemingly considerate and respect differing views especially in a big forum like ours where conflicting interests and views exist. More so in respect of those self appointed moderators.( that is what I understand.)
If we shed down our ego and consider the interests of the forum at large, this problem can be resolved.

My request to shri thimma is that he can try to be flexible.

Shri Nageswaran ,Shri VKV and arasi may consider to have a session with them outside the forum
Say, over a lunch or dinner which can be arranged by me if it is not inconvenient to them.

My telephone number is with Shri Nageswaran.

I pray for great future for rasikas.org.

Thanks for providing the link for the rasikas meet photograhs. Luckily, I had mailed the link to my son in time.

Folks: I did not see the photos--Am I missing a link(outside of my brain!)?Please enlighten!!

Seeing the caustic exchanges in the previous posts I was tempted to join the fray!! Then I resisted the impulse!! Fools rush in where angels fear to tread!! Oh my God!! I did not mean to imply that the ones who entered the fray are ----!!

Ajit: Thanks for your kind remarks-- I was planning to do a 2to 3 minute imitation of the masters of my times(40's 50's and 60's) on the lines of the Cleveland session(Uday might remember) adding a touch of levity to the occasion but unfortunately I could not leave the US for personal reasons--perhaps in the next meet I would do it OR better still I may record it and post it for the benefit of all rasikas (Now rasikas Please do not cringe at this thought of unsolicited imposition--the "delete" option is always available).f

I intend to continue the Semmangudi Saga after the New year --once the Festival season is over. I will allude to How the yesteryears musicians felt at that time about recordings(opposed to it for fear of exploitation and loss of revenue for them--legitimate concern in those days),how some of them even at that time w ould like their recordings played for them and offer self-congratulatory and self-adulatory comments pointing out how certain nuances have come out !! Recordings are a double-edged sword-- if they are flawed posterity will be reminded about it but the musicians' fears that it would detract from appreciation of their music is il-founded--afterall if Tendulakar scores a duck in a few matches would posterity forget the glorious centuries he has knocked in?

I have found modern rasikas--like the ones in this forum --especially the younger ones are much more tolerant of infractions so long as they are infrequent.

More on these later---

thanks for the info.
I know that my citation was read by Vishnuramprasad, but did not know that it was framed and presented to Shri V.Govindan.
Nice to hear that the 'rasikas meet' went off well.

Dear Rasikas,

I am physically and mentally tired after the successful conduct of our Global Rasikas Meet 2010.

I feel like a father who had successfully conducted the marriage of his dear daughter.

It gives me very great satisfaction and happiness and I can feel the happiness of
all the Rasikas who attended the meet.

An array of great musicians Sri Narasimhan [Father of Chithraveena Ravikiran,]
Sri Mysore Nagaraj, Mysore Manjunath, DR.Narmada, Dr.Radha Bhaskar, Sri Mudhra Bhaskar created a great respectability to our meet.

This was the first time that I have met in person many of the distinguished Rasikas in our group who were the descendants of great musicians like Sri Madhava MuniRao, son of Sri Sandhyavandanam Srinivasa Rao ,
Sri Srinivasan, grandson of M.S.Subbalakshmi and Son of Radha Viswanathan, Ramesh, Grandson of Kalpathy Ramanathan [User Name Mahavishnu], and many others, The prestigious Sabha Secretary Prathyaksham Bala, Secretary of Bairavi Arts Academy Pondy, The respected Sivadasan and so many. Due to time constraint I am unable to mention the other distinguished Rasikas.

The presence of Sri AM Sharmaji [Guruji for my granddaughter] amongst us was a most significant one.

Sharmaji is staying with me and I am introducing him to many parents who want to put their wards under the tutelage of Sharmaji. He will be staying with me
for another 3 or 4 days and will stay with his disciple at Velachery up to 31.12.2010.

Please watch for his participation in a panel discussion being arranged by Sri Shasikiran on 22.12.2010.

I have started the Audio processing of our meet. I hope to upload this in about 3 or 4 days.

"Fools rush in where angels fear to tread!! Oh my God!! I did not mean to imply that the ones who entered the fray are ----!!

Yes Sir I Agree. But, I continue the poem............

"Though I see the danger there
If there's a chance for me, then I don't care
And so I come to you, my love( for music), my heart above my head
So open up your heart and let this fool rush in "

PS
I read a story a couple of days back :while treading the GST road, a man was lying in a pool of blood, evidently had been hit by some vehicle. There was a line of vehicles moving along avoiding the place. No one was there to help the half dead man. Everybody was stopping for a minute and moved. I asked the taxi driver to stop the vehicle to see whether we can do something. Pat came the reply-Sir I do not want to get into problems..... etc. and moved away. . I do not know what happened further!
When wise men avoid an issue, the field is open only for fools! ( I do not want to put a simily)

Let us not spoil the happy mood of this get-together.
Everything was rosy until Thimma first wrote:
Coming in , to a rasikas meet has always posed a challenge for me . Given the nature of my now-hot-now-cold methods , I had to sneak in , like the nervous chap in a dark war zone . Calling out at every turn : Who is there ? Friend or Foe.?

Fortunately for me I ran into the friends only , today . Maybe the foes dont exist , VK comforted me.
Since this was not penned in humour (he rarely uses humour unless it is from Reader's Digest) I was puzzled.

Then he followed up
I wove my way through various names and cards , and in the process , remembered to tip my hat in deference to Arasi . It worked like Madhyamavathi and washed up any bitterness she may have had . I got it confirmed when she hailed me Hey Shassssheee

From then on I felt like the guy in that cartoon , seen coming out of a sermon . who is heard exclaiming.
Great sermon today . For once , I did not feel the priest meant me, when he was talking of sins
This again did not appear to be a jocular statement. For all I know I am not aware of Arasi (who is universally loved by our membership) harboring any bitterness towards anyone especially towards one she adores.

Maybe I hastily commented
Now I look forward to more of your comments especially the 'pungent' ones from Thimma :D
in a lighter vein (getting back my humour vein after the major surgery!). I later corrected myself to 'penchant' to indicate that he may comment according to his liking.

I have nothing but the highest respect for Thimma all these years and concern for his family welfare which continues. In fact I had nominated him for the first 'Rasika Siromani' on behalf of us following the suggestion of KSSR which Nageswaran can confirm. I don't know what happened. For whatever reason, he has taken a personal dislike for me which is beyond my comprehension. I wrote him privately to clear any misunderstandings asking for the reason of his sudden change in attitude and he chose to openly ridicule me for writing to him! Of course I don't take any offence since he is too young and has the right to chide/ridicule/criticize/ my actions (sometimes senile). He reminds me of my son who plugs both his ears when I try explaining my actions to him! How can one rationally communicate with one who will not even listen! He can always ask me for reasons since I have not closed any doors on him but in fact hold him in high respect as from day one onwards…

Statements such as:
Rasikas.org is not 10 % of what it was once upon a time
do not promote good will at this Forum. We have to give and take and not just dictate!
Again ‘mangaatha game’ (now I am in – now I am out) does not bode well for good comraderie.
Freedom of expression in a decent language is vital. We can respectfully disagree without calling names or
dubbing the other a ‘traitor’. We are all here as individuals and there is no need to gang up with your friend. Pulling your post to support/please your friend is actually sacrificing/insulting your own individuality.
Express yourself freely and if anyone is guilty and apologizes accept it gracefully instead of trying to humiliate and ridicule the errant. ‘To err is human and to forgive is divine’ is applicable to all members of a decent society…

Let us accentuate the positive

CML Again and again and again, unwanted / unwarranted comments from you, *thinking* it's funny. It's not. Really. Did you even attend this meet? For you to comment on "Friend or Foe" remark I expected you to have attended this meet, watched all the people, including Kji walking in with a look-around the place, and *then* decided whether to comment or not. Did you?

Why *do* you do this? You have absolutely nothing to ADD or ENHANCE this thread, as people who were ACTUALLY there are posting already. Plenty of threads have been spoiled because of your comments like this when you just post random stuff thinking Ha, this is an insult which I can always hide it under humour. I for one think this is a go at Kji for NO apparent reason AT ALL, other than the earlier skirmishes on this forum which has NOTHING to do with the meet discussed. To say you have emailed him to clear the air and then post what you have? Pungent / Penchant? First it was a "mistake", then it was, Oh, I changed it, next what? Delete your post? And then what? We all live happily ever after till you do the same?

You are no longer what *you* used to be. I can remember your posts full of explanations and interpretations that I found amazing, are you just posting because you have to post something on every single thread you click on?

Good god. Here I am jealous that I could not attend, reading and savoring every bit to re-create what happened in my mind. Then this absurdity with CML, once again.

CML
Even though I may be accused of bitching , I will throw in these last few words for the sake of debate.
Read your post 313 again.
You start with by saying you did not find my post humorous ( which is different from a post Not being humorous ) for a preamble , but forget to complete your defense, with a second half of explanations.Except to say - maybe I hastily .....with a silly use of the word pungent and even sillier change to penchant . In your hurry to latch on to penchant you forgot some rules of grammar , I suppose .
One has a penchant for humor or penchant for rabble rousing . One's humor is not penchant humor .

As far as your wishing well for my family is concerned - I can only say thanks .
Change in attitude - You jolly well know that it has never been sudden and much of it can be traced to one lousy Sunday when I had to order a Guest out of my home for interfering in my personal Life . Something which you so brazenly repeated a few weeks ago by insinuating that I was a poor husband . You must be some psychiatrist . To create trouble where none exist . I have never bothered to counter you on that for hundreds of people know that I have worked hard to be the best husband and the Best Dad . Others did it for me . But I did not ask them to do so.

As far as dubbing you or somebody a traitor - look back at the posts and see for yourself . I have aired my views only after I found people were obsessed with the wrong doings in India . Something I am ashamed of,too . I tried to balance it out by opening another thread highlighting the good work in India and you ended up spoiling that too . All that I had asked for in the process was for some let up in the bashing of Indians and the problems we face , and using up your energies to come back here and correct things , if you were patriotic enough. Instead of saying - Come to Canada ..

As far as dictating is concerned , that is a line you take from SP .I have never dictated anything to anyone in my life . But I was once a part of admin with you , fought for a vision for this forum and quit only when I was stung by the remark - " If you think you have built rasikas.org....."
You have been spineless janitors working on this boat with no compass and no goal .
If you do not feel the pain that I feel , about the directions rasikas.org has taken since then , you must be insensitive to most other feedback .
As far as mangaatha game is concerned , It will not recur . The next guy like rajesh and others who cajoled me into coming back and who keep their mouths shut now , in deference to you and your cronies , risk something if they approach me again.

As far as apologising / taking back is concerned ... You and rasikas.org can forget that . You all have taken me or granted for too long .
To the rest of the membership ... I will leave a parting thought .
That girl who sang at the fest . Spare a thought for her . Did you get a feeling that many others are living out their lives through her . Are there dangers in pushing and promoting a child without its permission. Is that an issue that should be bothering you in some degree . Go ahead and mull over it . In the knowledge that I shall never be opening a rasikas page again in my lifetime . That is for sure. Good Bye for one last time.

Dear Rasikas,

Now we will start the mudslinging meet.

As suggested by Sri VKV in our Global Rasikas Meet 2010 meeting,
The venue will be at the same place not in the hall, but in the open playground
which is very slush after the rains.

The function will be inaugurated by our respected cm lover and he will throw the
first handful of slush at Thimma alias Coolji. Then cm lover will throw another
Handful of slush on ftuddy and then he will throw the slushy mud on all the Rasikas randomly.

To Hell with the bonhomie created in our Global Rasikas meet.

It would be better we have a separate thread for this topic.

Cm lover will be very busy in this thread and save the worthy sites discussing all
topics about music.
S.NAGESWARAN.
21.12.2010

P.S; The Admin and the moderators may not have acted promptly to delate many
Unsavory mails in various threads till now. But I am sure that they will definitely delete this topic.

Hence I am sending the copy of my posting to the Rasikas who’s E-Mail IDs is available with me.

Forward this Mail to at least 3 Rasikas known to you and request them to forward
The same to 3 Rasikas they know.

There is a huge misunderstanding. At least I now have an inkling where Thimma is coming from. I will take it up with him privately and resolve the misunderstanding if he permiits. I never thought that a harmless word can cause such an explosion. Let us please stop discussing this here. No more analysis please from any side. This has been a wonderful heart-warming get together and kudos to Nageswaran for pulling it off.

In the spirit that binds us as RasikAs, I say the following about what's happening here. My concern now is to avoid all the slush and muddy flowing water here in the streets of Chennai (a bit of humor does not hurt?).Yes, while we are friends, it does not mean that we always approve of each others actions or the way in which we approach situations at Rasikas.org. There have been times which have made me wonder if I should also quit. Just because I have stood by a friend or two does not mean I 'favor' them in the same way that just because I don't comment about a fellow's thoughtless words does not mean I approve of them! There are many members like me who do not want to see discord escalated because Rasikas is a place they come to relax at, learn at and exchange thoughts with each other at. To make mud slinging a sport is not what they are here for at all!
As always, the civil thing to do is to send E-mails to each other to settle our differences, if possible.
An instance: CML gets carried away and says: Arasi is universally loved. Not true! Th truth is, many on the forum like me (I guess?).
Earlier, I would have joked around: come, my friend, that's not true!--which would have made him say, 'of course, you are! If I played it down, I would have heard another say: don' t be modest! And there it all would have ended.
A bit more complicated now: Aha! CML and Arasi are thick as thieves--they gang up together, these old, doddering , senile folks! Now, make other combinations and say 'A and B and C are best friends, that's why they are a team'! Now, let's get away from the forum into the real world: most of us would not speak up for a good friend when we don't perceive his or her behavior as decent and acceptable.
I am certain there are many others who came to Rasikas for exactly the same reasons as I had: finding like-minded music lovers, however different their tastes and background. Most of them are silent. I'm not a young person--nor am I capable of starting my own web-site to have free exchange of information and thoughts, guarding against negative feelings among members which can be escalated to dramatic heights!
If I'm old-fashioned, believing in sticking together as a team, so be it. If some disfavor me for it, so be it. I am not in a popularity contest. I am with friends who love music--and that's all there is to itl. Take me for what I am, if you will. I'm afraid I cannot take sides because that itself means that we are fashioning ourselves on the lines of political parties. We need not replicate them in a healthy place like Rasikas where we all like to come together and do not forget our intent in making CM a vibrant thing of the future...

Great post Arasi!

Let me see if I understand what you are saying:

If we find two members of rasikas quarreling, rather than take a side (irrespective of who we think is right), it is best to ignore the fracas and discuss matters concerning music.

See.. I can learn after all.

And,

Corollary: If you feel the need to quarrel with a fellow forumite, use email. It is only a click away... It's only a click away...

haha, how very simple for you to do this. Suggest you take a break from moderation. As a moderator of a site you cannot afford to do such things.

I wonder if there is any moderation happening here. It is like free for all. Anybody can say anything and get away.

Look at how moderators are running the 2 discussion groups associated with sangeethapriya. There, such a nonsense would have been nipped in the bud long ago and offending member would have been banned.

Arasi speaks as wisely as she always does.

Chalanata, my very best wishes for your recovery. You do put things in perspective.

Sounds about right to me, because I read these posts mainly for matters concerning music. I suppose that is true for a lot of people here? Personal matters in the lounge, spirituality and other things can be interesting, but at least I look at it very rarely, and there are other ways of exchanging views on such a broad spectrum.

I have learnt quite a lot from this forum, and I'm not expert enough to even figure out how to 'moderate' such discussions (perhaps it is impossible beyond a point). I must say I was happy to see the photographs of the rasikas meet, with a number of smiling faces there and hope that they find a way to get back to that mood.

I have to admit that I came to the forum today wondering if it would still be here. If I was skris, I would have given it up and shut it down. Goodness knows (and my fellow members here, and on other forums, do too) I am no angel and am just as given to loss of temper or a sharp retort as any. We are all but human, and any interaction, online or off, is going to reflect that, and contain, in some measure, all aspects of our humanity.

At our meeting, Arasi made the point that none of this would exist without skris. None of this would happen, or continue, day to day, without skris, VK, and CML. Simply: if we do not like their house we need not visit it.
Look at how moderators are running the 2 discussion groups associated with sangeethapriya. There, such a nonsense would have been nipped in the bud long ago and offending member would have been banned.
Yes, you are right. We know that skris and his team do not like or want to run a forum in that way. Perhaps they will revise their views. I, too, would be in favour of greater control. Perhaps, though, they may say that they do not wish to run a forum where such control is necessary.

If personal quarrels must break out (and they will, as I said, we are but human) then can they not be on a thread which is of a more personal nature? I feel very sad for Sri Nageswaran, who has put such effort into our function and who must surely be hurt by what has transpired.

This was a special occasion. Almost all families need, at some time, to practice putting aside personal differences for special occasions. We have sadly failed to do that.
If we find two members of rasikas quarreling, rather than take a side (irrespective of who we think is right), it is best to ignore the fracas and discuss matters concerning music.
Well said, Suresh. It should take just one great performance to put this in perspective. Chalanata has done so in a much more profound way than even music can. My best wishes to him, to GBL, to CML, and to all others who are or have been recently been, in ill health.

rajumds-Thanks for reloading the Photos which i had missed.
rajeshnat- In the group photo next to Mahavishnu, the guy with 'Blue Shirt' is my brother VS Viswanath. U wanted me to confirm.

What i conveyed in my brief when i spoke was: Some very famous tamil songs like Thamadame(Thodi); Kaana vEndAmo(Sriranjani); Poon Kuyil(Kaapi) , I could get the meaning in the Forum which added my enjoying these songs sung by GNB,KVN & DKP/DKJ.

I have been a member of this forum for the past 4 years. I have been immensely benefitted by being a member for the following reasons
a) A nice song is heard in any available media today.
b) Next, as a rasika i am kindled to get the lyrics of this song. Post a request in the forum- Lakshmanji obliges immediately.
c) Next step - One can now practise this song
d) Some Sanskrit /Tamil/Telugu compositions, one would love to get the meaning which will add to the emotional aspect of the composer.
For Tamil Compositions - rshankar and arasi and other members have always obliged my REQUESTS. The same is true for Sanskrit/ Telugu compositions.
e) Coolji has uploaded plenty of songs upon rasikas request
Everydoubt reg various aspects of CM etc,etc have been invariably answered by learned rasikas of this forum.
As a rasika "What else is required ? "
That's why "I was thrilled to attend this mtg."
Thanks to everyone.

Compared to so many doyens in this forum, I am relatively a new member, joined just seven months back.

As against a few conributions that I could make, the forum has given me lots of benefits for which I am thankful. The readiness with which Lakshman offers the lyrics is magical, the great sense of sharing the wealth of recordings by mankuthimma is astonishing, the scholarly translation skill of rshankar is amazing, and vgovindan's contribution to the carnatic music field is unparalleled. There are many others whom I admire ...

My thanks to everyone.

First of all, congratulations on the successful meet. Needless to say it is due to the initiative and effort of Sri.Nageswaran, who has been ably assisted by several other rasikas. Incidentally I am curious to know how many rasikas actually turned up. As I can see from the thread, there were around 6-7 artists as well. Photographs are good. Thanks. I guess the group photo is only partial and there were many more in attendance. It will be nice to see their faces as well.

More than the event, I am truly impressed by the effort in taking the group forward by some of our senior members, like CML , Mankuthimma and a few others. I am sure they resort to the route followed by Kumudam (of yester years- not read it now for years), Times of India of today, TV channels and other media. Controversies and fights are the most selling. I am quite amused and interested in the fight of these friends and value their ultimate objective of popularising carnatic music and the rasikas forum by this joke. Wish them all the best. I along with thousands of other rasikas will keep following the "quarrel" and thus keep the forum active, alive and "popular". It cannot be real, after all. They are not boys- not even "tweens" as someone mentioned here.

We should remember that the forum is just a hobby club. It is not a professional group. Taking matters too seriously and personally is unbecoming of the true character of this group. Carnatic music is the hobby of the elite or so do we claim. Let us demonstrate it by our polished behaviour- thoughts, words and deeds.

Dear Fellow Rasikas,
I am really moved by the solidarity displayed by all of you in showering love and affection on me though many of us have not met in person.
Now let me apologize to you all for having misled you all by telling a lie. I am not ailing from cancer or any ailment as of now. I wanted to reduce the heat in the exchanges and divert the mood and I have seen that when a bigger crisis attacks we all sink our differences and stand united. This is not the time for settling our personal scores especially at a time when our dear Nageswaran sir and team made the enormous task of the meet possible and look for pleasant exchanges. Nageswaran sir and team I bow to you; you have done a great job. congrats.
I'm unable to change my nutty ways despite advancing in age. Sorry again... But my appeal sans the self 'inflicted sickness' remains. We shall all be together...
