Jiva Performing Arts presents an evening of dance with the renowned Dancer,
Choreographer, Guru and Academician, Professor CV Chandrasekhar of Chennai,
India. This will be followed by a full Bharatanatyam recital by Sonali Skandan,
featuring the choreography, live vocals and nattuvangam of Professor
Chandrasekhar on September 14, 2009 at Hunter College in New York City.
Accompanying musicians are AR Balaskandan on mridangam and Trina Basu on violin.
Professor Chandrasekhar will share his experience that he has amassed from a
career in dance spanning over 60 years. The lecture demonstration will cover
aspects of Bharatanatyam as related to nritta, or abstract dance, and abhinayam,
the art of expression and the interrelations between the two. This will be
followed by a full classical Bharatanatyam recital by Sonali Skandan. She will
present signature pieces of Professor CVC's acclaimed choreography and will
display the full repertoire of Bharatanatyam, from Pushpanjali to Thillana.
C.V. Chandrasekhar, one of India's senior most Bharatanatyam dancers, was
trained at the internationally renowned Kalakshetra in Chennai under the
mentorship of Rukmini Devi Arundale. He served at the Benaras Hindu University
and M. S. University of Baroda and retired as the Head and Dean of the Faculty
of Performing Arts of M S University of Baroda. C.V. Chandrasekhar is a
multi-faceted personality being a dancer, choreographer, researcher, musician,
academician, composer and highly acclaimed teacher of Bharatanatyam. He has been
performing for the past six decades in India and all over the globe and is
invited by many dancers the world over to teach and to choreograph. A much
revered dancer in his seventies, his presentation of Bharatanatyam technique is
at its finest and continues to be an inspiration for all dancers.
Sonali is a devoted and passionate disciple of Bharatanatyam and is a student of
the renowned Professor C.V. Chandrasekhar of Chennai, India and also learned the
art of abhinayam from Smt. Bragha Bessel.
Sonali has given solo performances at major dance festivals in the US and
abroad, including the Toronto International Dance Festival, the Downtown Dance
Festival in NYC, the DanceNow Festival in NYC, the Asian American Dance Festival
in San Francisco, CA and the Chennai Music and Dance Festival and Natyanjali
Festivals in India. As an educator, she has given lecture demonstrations and
workshops in museums and schools throughout the NYC area and is a professional
teaching artist for many organizations. Sonali runs her institute, Jiva
Performing Arts, which seeks to educate and promote the classical arts of India
here in NYC.
