This majestic ragam is considered by many to be "Raga Supremo" of Indian music. Last night I was listening to Manakkal Rangarajan's (see details in his thread) rendition of Dakshinamurte - simply exquisite.

I have listend to a KVN/Semmangudi joint rendition of Endukku peddala. Doea anyone have it available for upload? I would also be interested in the whole concert.

I understand the famous 'Do Re Mi' from Sound of Music is set to the Sankarabharanam scale. Would be interesting to hear a Carnatic version of this song - gamaka, nerval, swaras and all...:)

DRS: It was part of an article I wrote sometime ago. You missed seeing the link I had posted in "Most popular rAgAs" in the Hindustani music section. Here is the link:

Thanks Lakshman. Talking of rAga swyambhUswara, Mysore vINe subbaNNa has a composition in this rAga to his credit.

Vid|| C.Rangiah has composed using one swara upwards. Some of the swarAntara rAgas he has created and/or composed in-

nigamagAmini (20th mELa)- MGSGMNS* | S*NMGMGS ||- nigamagAmini pAhi jaganmOhini

kanakAngada (1st mELa)- SRMDS* | S*DMRS | (This is the same as lavangi by BMK)

nigamagamani (65th mELa)- SGMNS* | S*NMGS ||- nigamagamani pAhi amba

gauLISvari (15th mELa)- SRMDS* | S*DMRS ||- pAhi cAmuNDESvari

rAga with 3 swaras created and handled by him

bilvadaLa (16th mELa)- SGDS* | S*DGS ||- pAhi cAmuNDESvari

Please add these to your database if you have not already included them. (Your comment in the article about there probably being no compositions in all save 2 swarAntara rAgas that prompted me to put up this list).

Thanks DRS. I had nigamAgamani pAhi ambA in my database but not the others.
Do you happen to know the starting words of the svayambhUsvara song of VINa Subbanna?
Any ideas on the tALAs for these songs?

You are welcome Lakshman

The kRtis in bilvadaLa, nigamagamani are in Adi
The one in nigamagAmini is in rUpaka and gauLISvari is in miSracApu. I missed out the kanakAngada kRti earlier. That too is pAhi cAmuNDESvari set to miSracApu. Sorry I dont have the swayambhuSwara kRti to hand.

Will send you a list of some og C.Rangiah's other kRtis in the rare rAgas. I presume you have his list of 72 mELakarta kRtis.

As for lyrics, I can provide you if you are looking for a few specific ones.

Ahem! Back to Sankarabharanam, as the thread is titled...

Thookiya Thiruvadi, Yaar Endrennamale and Muthukumarayyane are the Tamil ones that seem to be popular, more as main items...

The most famous Thyagaraja compositions in this rAgA are probably: Endukku Peddala, Swara Raga Sudha & Vara Leela Gana Lola.

Tyagaraja has 30+ compositions in shankarAbharaNa - Many gems in this rAga.

Are there any other in the 'vara lIla gAna lOla' genus ? I mean, they are very much like the note Swaras of Dikshita..

Akshaya Linga Vibho; Sadashivam Upasmahe;Dakshinamurte Of Muthuswamy Dikshitar are very majestic compositions.

Akshaya Linga Vibho in Misra Chapu & Dakshinamurte in Jampe are tough to sing.

Endukku Peddala;Swara Raga Sudha;Emi Neramu of Thyagaraja are quite popular songs.

Of course, Saroja Dalanetri of Shyama Shastri has become equally famous.

Mahalakshmim of Papanasam Shivan and Shankaracharyam of Subbarama Dikshitar have also become popular.

Few popular ones left out are manasu swAdheenamai - thyagarAja and devi jagatjanani ambA - Swathi tirunal. Rare krithis that I heard was alarulu guriyaga of Annamacharya (courtesy Smt pantulA ramA) , thookiya tiruvadi of sudananda bharati (no takers today) and pOgAdiralO ranga of purandaradAsar (courtesy Abhisek raghuraman).

On a personal note, overall I like RTP's (I love taanam especially)more than main krithis in melakartha #29. Incidentally to my imperfect observation, this rAga is one which triggers significant crowd exodus during the start of the main. :(

Rajeshnat,
Good observation. As majestic as the rAgA is, it is akin to tani when it comes to 'taking a break' for some in the audience. I suppose the slow exposition the rAgA lends itself to, could be the reason. I find 'manasu swAdInamaina' to be one of the most pleasing kritis in the rAgA. It has movement and it moves me in its meaning too.

There are over 1160 songs listed in this rAgA.

Dear Rajeshnat,
Thanks for your observation. I just posted my listings off hand and whatever came to my mind.
Yes! I really missed the lovely song "Manasu Swadheenamaiyya" of Tyagaraja ( KVN used to excellently sing this song).
As rightly pointed out by arasi, we will definitely get moved by this song due to it's music & meaning.
One more observation: Akshya Linga Vibho & Manasu Swadheenmaiyya both set to Misra Chapu and we feel a musical parallelism in both these compositions.
True- I also missed Alarulu Guriyaka of Annmacharya( Popularised by Nedunuri ?) & Pogadiralo Ranga of Purandaradasa( Excellently sung by S Janaki( ?) in a Kannada movie).

This was from the movie "hAlu-jEnu" (1982). I could not find this song either under kannadaaudio.com, or musicindia.com. Yes, It was sung by S Janaki

You can listen the pOgadirelo ranga sung by K S Surekha listed as movie from "Shri KrishnalIla"

from the above page.

Thanks Ramakriya for confirming that Pogadiralo was indeed sung by S Janaki.
Chembai used to sing Eduta Nilachi excellently and also I think Maali must have played " Buddhiraadu ". These songs can also be added to the above list--- VS_Manjunath

Is there a link for the lyrics of Sri Chandrasekharam - Shankarabharanam. This is the pallavi part of a RTP sung by Semmangudi.

Composer? I have trawled the web with no success.
Thanks

Jayaram,

I think this raga became more popular after the Sankarabaram movie by Viswanath. Along with that Samaja vara gamana and Turaguna songs also became popular among mass.

My pocessions are the following, all commercial recordings.

1. The best of my collection in sankarabaranam is a very long rendition of Maharajapuram Santhanam at a bangalore Rama Seva mandeli concert. Vellore ramabhadran and Lalgudi Jayaraman are accompnaying him. It was not his usual 'cocert for mass'. The album is a HMV and RPG release. The song is manasu swadinaa in mishra chapu.

2. RTP by SSI, again the same accompaniment (VR,LJ) in an album for KGS trust. The album is by dreams audio. This concert is a mind boggling album with the best song selection. I almost feel every current living artist should take this song list and perform the concert as a respect to SSI. Just to clarify the RTP is not his best in that album (my guess).

3. MS amma - UN concert - album by SaReGaMa - saroja dala nethri
4. MS amma- Air radio recitals - album by SaReGaMa - swara raga sudha
There is one more album by MS "live from Russia" released last year during music season. The recording is not of good quality. The song in this is sankaracharyam.

5. Balamurali - Titled Sankarabaranam by Anand Audio - is a unique album - five songs in this raga- The raga alapana is distributed in all songs-New concept.
6. TMK - INRECO release - saroja dala nethri- My second best choice of what I have.
7. Sanjay - INRECO release - Shri dakshinamuthi -
8. Sanjay - Live in USA - CDW album - shankaracharyam. This is also a very good one. But some noise comes and creeps in towards the end of the alapana.
9. Sudha Raghunathan - Sankarabaranam at Sanfrancisco- 1998- Amutham audio - swara raga sudha - more than 1 hour.

Though this raga is rendered by everyone in concerts, when it comes to albums, everyone prefer kamboji, kalyani, mohanam etc.. why???

I like to listen to mandolin srinivas, vijay siva sanakarabaranam alapana
and almost everyone's RTP in sankarabaranam.

I would include Manakkal's rendition of Dakshinamurthe in my all-time favorites list. I believe this piece is in the CD recently released by Carnatica.
Should be in any serious rasika's collection.

Talking of 'Shankaracharyam', I remember hearing another Sanskrit vilamba kala kriti, also in Sankarabharanam, also in praise of a Kanchi Shankaracharya, which Sri TKG and CV Narasimhan sang together during the 1999-2000 Season.

It was in one of the less common talas, perhaps Jhampa or Khanda triputa?

Sorry my details are very patchy, but could anyone identify what kriti this could have been?

@ravi2006, were you by any chance referring to "sri shanmukha janaka chandramouli" by Mysore Sadasiva Rao in Misra Jhampe? Its a gem of a composition and has been sung by MS Subbulakshmi. The anupallavi mentions him as "paashaNda mata khaNdana shaNmata sthaapana sriman mahaa devendra saraswati" - the chittaiswara swarasahitya is a thing of beauty!

The Krithi referred to was by sri.N.S Ramachandran sung frequently by Semmangudi and MSS starting as Shri Chandrasekhara Yathindram. This is also uploaded by SriVasu in Sangeethapriya.org as aspecial concert without accompaniments by MSS
