The Veena couple well known to our rasikas presented a brilliant concert. Today being Sarasvathi Puja & Mahanavami, the concert was almost entirely Devi Kritis, mainly Dikshitar's.
They were accompanied by Mannargudi Sri Easwaran and Sri Govindarajan on Mridangam and Ghatam respectively. Both accompanists gave scintillating percussion support.
The list of songs :
1. Intamodi ( Varnam )- Saranga - Adi
2. Vinaayaka Vighna-naashaka - Vegavahini - Rupakam - MD ( R N S)
3. Anandaamritaakarshini - Amritavarshini - Adi - MD
4. Sri Kamalaambikaayaam - Sahana - Tisra Triputa - MD (R)
5. Kanjadalaayataakshi - Kamalamanohari - Adi - MD
6. Sri Sarasvati Namostute - Arabhi - Rupakam - MD ( R,S)
7. Maamava Meenaakshi - Varali - M. Chapu (R T N S, Tani)
8. Maaye tvam - Tarangini - Adi - MD
9. Sri Kamalaambike - Sri - Khanda Eka - MD
The alapanas were exquisite and the RTP in Varali also took us thtough Bilahari, Saveri, Brindavana Saranga and Hindolam. The Tanam, as well as Maye Tvam were following audience requests. Again, based on a request Smt Jaysri sang parts of the Sahana and Varali kritis along with the Veena and this made us appreciate the words and music even more.
The ambience of Musiri House added to the charm, though there were quite a few disturbances in the form of chiming clocks, reversing cars and the odd cellphone.

Rajani,
Delighted to see your review (and translation too, in the Sahitya Section).
Takes me back two years when we first met at J&J's Ragasudha concert!
How I wish I had been there! THREE of our forumites on stage, Matchless Easwaran and our duo!
J&J's music is serene and soul stirring. Hope I catch them once again when I come to India.

Musiri House is the house on Oliver Road ( later renamed Musiri Subramania Iyer Road upon SSI's efforts) in Mylapore, where the great Musiri lived. His descendents live there now and open up their house for chamber concerts once in a while. The terrace of their house is also the venue for historian Ms Chithra Madhavan's monthly lecture on "The Cutural History of India".
I am not sure if anyone in that family is a musician. Hope someone can clarify that.

Rajani,
If I am not mistaken, one of Musiri's grandaughters is Suguna Purushottam's student.
J&J,
You will like the Indra Nagar Sabha hall (don't know if you have played thee before). You will meet at least one of our fellow forumites there with her young daughter who sings and was favorably reviewed in the Hindu recently. Hope Hari, Braindrain, Manjunath and others are able to make it. They will, unless it is a way out place for them. As Punarvasu says, your MD krutis are in a class of their own.
