Could I request a translation of this song? I promise this will be the last song in harikAmbhOji that I request [at least for some time :-)].

Lyrics are taken from here: http://www.indiadivine.org/audarya/shak ... manam.html

pallavi:
enadhu manam kavalai enumiruL soozhnNdhaal
evaridam muRaiyiduvEn en seyvEn (enadhu)

anupallavi:
unadhu malaradiyil vizhuvEn thozhuvEn
urugi ammaa enRazhuvEn anRi
(enadhu)

charaNam:
ulaguyirelaam eenRa jagan maathaa
un uLLam enakku mattum iranNgaadhaa
kaliyin kodumai kaNdun karuNai aNYchinadhO
karuNaanNidhi yenRunaip pugazhvadhum pazhudhO
(enadhu)

enadhu manam kavalai enumiruL soozhnNdhaal
If the darkness of worry sorrounds my mind
evaridam muRaiyiduvEn en seyvEn (enadhu)
To whom shall I appeal, where will I go?

anupallavi:
unadhu malaradiyil vizhuvEn thozhuvEn
I will fall at your flower-like feet,pray
urugi ammaa enRazhuvEn anRi
I will cry out to you 'oh mother' (with a heart)melting
(and)other than that(to whom shall I appeal, what will I do)
(enadhu)

charaNam:
ulaguyirelaam eenRa jagan maathaa
oh mother of the universe, who has given birth to all the beings in the world
un uLLam enakku mattum iranNgaadhaa
will your heart not melt for me only?
(meaning are you being unfair to me by not showing compassion)
kaliyin kodumai kaNdun karuNai aNYchinadhO
even after seeing the evils of the kali(yuga) will ther be no compassion from you? *
karuNaanNidhi yenRunaip pugazhvadhum pazhudhO
Is it wrong to praise you as the receptacle of compassion?
(enadhu)

*I am not sure of these words 'aNY chinadO'-may be there is a typo

Prashant, I have given the meaning;but I feel this song has been taken up earlier; am not sure. But I remember there was some discussion on the words 'enadu manam kavalaiyenum iruL soozhndAl' -whether it is 'manam' or 'manadil'.

In the last thread when you asked for harikambOdhi , I was about to suggest that you learn eNadhu manam , two renditions are worth every penny one is vijaysiva (which I am assuming you would have heard) and the other once sung by sowmya.

pApanAsam shivan challenges thyagarAja a lot in this rAga which is T's speciality.

Can you provide a link to these compositions please, thanks :)

Prashant,
I have a feeling Ravi has given the meaning already--a while ago.
Have a question for you. Has your award been given yet?

arasi: I thought so too, but then I couldn't find it. I asked Ravi, and he is unable to trace it. He will post his translation shortly. Thanks to Punarvasu for her usual quick response. I am using it to learn the song this morning...

I did receive the award at Shanmukhananda on October 2. I was lucky to receive a chance to sing at the main hall for 1 hour after the award ceremony. It was a great experience to say the least.

I sang: shankaram abhirAmi manOharam / dhanyuDevvaDO / kailAsa nAthEna / karuNAkaranE shiva shankaranE - kIravANi [pApanAsam Sivan] / gAndhi mahAn piRandAr - karnATaka dEvagAndhAri [periasAmi tUran] / sItA kalyANa vaibhOgamE.

Thanks for remembering, and for your good wishes.

This is what I had in my records:

pallavi
enadu manam kavalai enumiruL sUzhnNdAl
evariDam muRaiyiDuvEn en seyvEn (enadu"¦)

If my (enadu) mind is beset/encompassed by (sUzhndAl) by the dark forces (iruL) of distress/worries (kavali enum), what (en) am I to do (seyvEn)? To (iDam) whom (evar) can I lay out/address (iDuvEn) my complaint to?

anupallavi
unadu malaraDiyil vizhuvEn tozhuvEn
urugi ammA enRazhuvEn anRi (enadu...)

(If my mind is beset/encompassed by the dark forces of distress/worries), I will fall (vishuvEn) at your flower (malar)-like feet (aDiyil), worship you (tozhuvEn), and cry out (azhuvEn) ‘Oh mother’ (ammA enRu) to you with a melting heart (urugi). But for this (anRi), I know not what I’ll do.

caraNam
ulaguyirelAm InRa jagan mAtA
un uLLam enakku maTTum iranNgAdA
kaliyin koDumai kaNDun karuNai anjinadO
karuNAnidhi enRunai-p pugazhvadum pazhudO (enadu"¦)

Oh mother (mAtA) of the universe (jagan) who has created/brought forth/given birth to (Inra) to all (ellAm) of the living creatures (uyir) of this world (ulaga), why is it that your (un) heart (uLLam) is not able to melt in compassion (iraNgAdA) for me (enakku) alone (maTTum)? Even after realizing/visualizing (kaNDum) the inhumane tyranny (koDumai) of kaliyug (kaliyin), why is your legendary compassion (karuNai) hesitating/fearing (anjinadO) to come to my rescue? Or, is it our mistake (pazhudO) to praise (pugazhuvadum) you (unai) as (enRu) the repository (nidhi) of compassion (karuNA)? (If my mind is beset/encompassed by the dark forces of distress/worries, what am I to do? To whom can I lay out/address my complaints to?)

Ravi,
Do you remember the bee in my bonnet about the opening line??!!
I still feel that it is a printer's devil: enadu manam (or enadu manadil--as I think PS would have meant it)?
Then there is evariDam muRaiyiDuvEn, nAn. If manam is the subject, the manam will muRaiyiDum, not nAn. So, he would have meant it as manadil and it fits right in, that manadil.
While I would not like to hear the words changed in my songs, I wouldn't be keen on listening to their being sung a la typos either :)

Prashant,
Good to hear about the event and your concert. October 2nd, and so the Turan song on Gandhi! Very nice...

Punarvasu - can you post that link? I looked so frantically for it...to no avail so far. I remember all too well Arasi's take on the second word!
