TM Krishna at NCPA's Experimental Theatre on 31/10/09

The magic woven by TMK cannot be described in mere words! It was truly an unforgettable experience.
Still, for my fellow-Mumbaikars (many of whom are out of the country at the moment) and other TMK fans who missed a great concert,I shall list out what was sung.Since the theme was 'Devi-Celebrating The Divine'the repertoire presented were compositions singing the glory of Devi in her myriad forms.

Vocal-TMKrishna
Violin-HNBhaskar
Mridangam-KVPrasad
Tambura-Vignesh Easwar

Sri Varalakshmi-Sri-Dikshitar-S

Srilalithe-Bhairavi-Tyagaraja-Neraval at Kannatalli

Kamakshi-Swarajati -Yadukula Kamboji-Shyama Shastri-

The elaborate ragam was out of this world-every possible nuance explored & Bhaskar supported him excellently. The swarajathi was sung with great feeling, bringing out all the richness of the glorious composition.

Pahi Parvata Nandini-Arabhi-Swati Tirunal

RTP-Vachaspati-2kalaichowkam,adi talam-Pallavi-Devi Sri Tripura Sundari deena dayapari Jagadeeshwari-The ragam was sung very elaborately-beautiful touches, traversing 21/2 octaves with finesse & verve-Bhaskar too played brilliantly-The tanam, esp. the explosive fast-speed tanam left us breathless! So also the 2nd kalam neraval-sheer genius!Ragamalika swaraprastara Sahana,varali,Kamboji,Shankarabharanam,Todi,Saveri-woven very ingeniously!

The tani by KVPrasad also was well-received.His soft, dextrous fingers added to the beauty of the concert.

Verses -Omkara Panjarashuki - ragamalika- Kalidasa, woven in such a beautiful ragamalika,(each word expressed with such reverence & love was simply soul-stirring)-Delightful Ananda Bhairavi,Kalyani,Dhanyasi,Begada,Mayamalavagowla,Sama,Lalita,Suruti,Desh followed by

Vande Mataram-sung with so much of feeling-with all those new ,never-before explored touches brought goose-bumps-the words sujalam, suphalam caressed with such tender care and the way he sang malayaja sheetalam,I could actually feel the cool breeze wafting in!!The word suhasinim was enunciated so delicately -a more bhava-purna rendering of this beautiful composition,I have yet to come across! The audience rose as one, as soon as the last note faded out,to applaud the greatly inspired TMK ,the applause lasting quite a while!!This concert will be etched in my memory for a long long time!

'pula(kA^N)kita yAmini' in the spirit of the composition?? :P

Seems to have been an ethereal concert.

Shriranjani,
Glad you enjoyed the concert. Sounds like a great one. Was just wondering: had he sung Shriranjani, how much more ethereal, divine it would have sounded to you! Kidding of course :)

Very good review , good also to see vignesh easwar in the tampura. The concert has depth and also is concise in numbers there is just 7. I have heard him singing all numbers excepting that kalidasa's ragamAligA. Keep it coming.
where is NCPA experimental theatre in mumbai??

S for shri varalakshmi was sung at 'CArumati'.

Rajesh - Experimental is at the back of the NCPA complex in Nariman Point. It seats about 300 people and is traditionally a theater venue. I've seen many one-act plays there, and it was a very refreshing change to hear a concert in this venue. The acoustics and sound arrangements were exemplary to say the least.

shriranjani, thanks for a wonderful review of 'mind-blowing' concert by TMK; yet another miss for me; TMK is back in mumbai within 2 weeks for the solo performance. When the ambience is good, accoustics is good, audience is good (knowledgeable, discerning) and the cuthceri is also good, what more can one ask for?

I did wonder at choice of venue-but like Prashant mentioned, the sound arrangement, acoustics & maybe theme, brought out the best in TMK.

Dear Arasi-a divine shriranjani would have been the topping on the icing of the perfect cake!!

:) Rajesh and Punarvasu!
That was cherries or berries on top to shriranjani's cake (bride and groom figurines in the case of 'another' reviewer who keeps us in suspense)!

Not so, Shriranjani!--if the cake is minimal and when the weighing down cherries and berries can keep one's weight under control :)

Yes, time to go back to the concert--understood.
tAngalA means supportively--which does not make sense here. Is it tAngalai? In which case, a rather harsh statement, don't you think?

Not harsh , but jokingly telling him that he is doing too much of the letter gathering and creating a word and highlighting with bold etc. Only coolkapali can explain!

Seems to be a nice relaxing song list rather than a power packed one.
