new_cmfan, if you are a betting kind of person, that is a sure bet. He has been doing this for quite a while. He does that with ragamalika viriththam also. The last raga of the viruththam is also the raga of the next short song. I am not sure if he is as consistent as he is about the RTP last raga to the raga of the thillana.

oh man! whaat a concert!
sanjay and the accompanists were amazing as usual, and also highly down-to-earth considering some of the inconveniences at the temple - mike was set up about 45 min late, lotsa different kinds noises around etc etc ..
will post a list soon!
rshankar - it was good meeting u at the temple.

Likewise!

The concert was amazing - I am still in a daze - Have no clue how I got home - I must have followed the directions from the GPS!

I will post my recollections when I am back on terra firma for, 'Aj kal mErE pAv jamIn par paDtE nahIn'!

While I understand the request for a list, which has become a must in all Internet reviews, I have realized that "a list" does not make a concert. Rasikas all of the over world seem to be vicariously enjoying the concert list, if I might say. BTW, I must confess that I used to love lists too. Recently, I was listening to a TNS - LGJ - Raghu concert - with standard items - Vatapi, SamajaVara, Aparadhamula, Pakkala Neelabadi - what a high quality vintage concert.

Let me get the others started on this concert review with my 'opinion' (no technical details, as I am not qualified to comment on those aspects - just my rasAnubhava) on this awesome concert:

Sri Sanjay Subrahmanyan Vocal
Sri Varadarajan Violin
Neyveli Sri Venkatesh mrudangam

A concert that I have been looking forward to ever since it was first announced and I realized that I would not be able to attend the one in NJ today! It was my first trip to the temple - and despite my best intentions, I got there a few minutes past 4. I just rushed past the temple to the basement, only to realize that there was a delay - the people who handled the mikes/sound system were stuck in traffic! Gave me time to go upstairs, have a leisurely darSan, come down and help a friend lay out more chairs as the hall was getting filled up before the much-awaited 'sound guys' showed up. After they had done the basic set up, the main artists who had been waiting patiently came out, and the final adjustments were made! As mentioned above (by fuddyduddy), they were a 'cool' bunch, and did not seem to be frustrated by the delay. Fuddyduddy gave a very sweet and short intro (under 2 minutes), along with the request to sing his trademark O hO kAlamE and we were off!

1) The first was a varNam (PSI?) in cakravAham, jalajAkshi (tALam ?) that gave a very nice and very brisk start to the proceedings - made us sit up, shake off the languor that had set in, and fasten our seat belts.
2) This was followed by a brief outline of kEdAram that preceded PSI's samayamidE nannu brOva in rUpakam (?) - it was beautiful, reposeful, and the diction was clear - clear enough for me to realize that some of the words were different from what I had heard before - but the overall meaning was the same. After the caraNam, he sang the pallavi, and began a round of svarams - starting with sa ri, and he anchored several rounds with sa ri (samayamidE...) - I thought it was very neat and apt.
3) Next was a nice AlApanai of simhEndramadhyamam, followed by the time-tested nIdu caraNamulE (m. cApu??) of Sri tyAgarAja. There was a very nice nereval at the pallavi after he sang the caraNam followed by expansive svarams at 'nIdu caraNamulE'.
4) Then came an absolutely wonderful khamAs AlApanai - Sri Varadarajan's responses were soft and beautiful. As the AlApana was going on, I was mentally wondering what the song would be. I was completely wrong - he sang the MD masterpiece, Sri santAna gOpAla krishnam (Adi) - one of the best (probably THE best) versions of this song I've heard! Sparkling svaras danced around 'nartana muraLidharam' in the caraNam. Sri Venkatesh's playing was so wonderfully anticipatory, softly enhancing the vocalist and in general elevated this song to a pinnacle.
5) Then came the main - a very well structured mOhanam AlApanai with a worthy reply from Sri Varadarajan. This was followed by Papanasam Sr Sivan's absolutely fabulous nArAyaNa divya nAmam (Adi) rendered in a very introspective manner. 'pArkaDalil aRavaNai tuyil varadan' was very evocative of the deity of sESa SAyi Sri ranganAthasvAmi mUrti upstairs. He chose 'mArajanakan, karuNAlayan anbar tunbam agala maNgaLam aruLvOn' for the neveral - it was a very emotionally rendered nereval - completely satisfying. For me, this song is synonymous with Smt. MSS, and when she sings this composition of PS', the rAgam becomes secondary to the fervency of the appeal in her voice, especially when she intones 'anbar tunbam agala mangaLam aruLvOn', while in Sanjay's hands, mOhanam was right up front, the vehicle for his plea. This was followed by detailed svaras, and an scintillating tani from Sri Vankatesh - a very gentle, yet well executed tani (that did not give us a headache, or make us feel that the mrudangam was taking a beating), after which Sri Sanjay sang the remainder of the caraNam and concluded the piece.
6) He then took up the request for O hO kAlamE, the composition of mAyUram vEdanAyakkam piLLai in sahAnA bemoaning the ravages of time (http://rasikas.org/forums/post106765.html#p106765) - he sang the first caraNam as a viruttam, before starting from the pallavi.
7) A filler - vEnugAnamUrtE in gAnamUrti attributed to Sri tyAgarAja
8) The highlight of the evening: RTP in mukhAri - The rAgam was very sensitively portrayed - completely at variance with Sri OVK's take in 'viSamakAra kaNNan' (Prashant and VK please take note! :P) followed by a nice tAnam - I was glad that it was not one of those cursory 2-minute tAnams. The pallavi was 'gOvindA alarmElmangai maNALA vA tiruvEnkaTanAthA'. I had no clue what the rAgas of the set of two rAgamAlika svaras he sang were (actually my guesses were SO off, I'd rather not repeat them!!) - for the second rAga (the one that was the pantuvarALi janyam), I liked the jhaNThai svaras he sang very much. Goes to show that identifying the rAga is not at all necessary to enjoy it! The last rAga (durgA) was a very meditative rAga, and although it was very obviously from the HM world (flat notes), I think there was a concerted effort to 'carnaticize' it in places with brigas (this might just be my ignorance speaking here).

After this magnum opus of an RTP, there was a brief break when the temple authorities felicitated the artists with 'ponnADai' and prasAdam - followed by the tukkaDa section.

I request the others, Fuddyduddy, Mahesh3, RVeeraraghavan and anyone else who attended this concert to complete the list and fix any mistakes I made....

I was thinking that sudhdhasAveri sung in madhyamashruti will be durgA;
and durgA sung in panchamashruti will sound more like sudhdhasaveri.
Because, there is a song of Swami Dayananda Saraswati-'rAmam bhajE shyAmam manasA' in durga; we always sing it in madhyamashruti and it does sound different if sung in panchamashruti.

Nidu Charanamule is thought to be composed by some brothers....it is believed not to be a tyagaraja krithi despte having the mudra.

Santanagopala Krishnam is in roopaka talam.

I liked your review :) Must have been a cracker of a concert!

Rasika - thanks for the corrections - my laya sense is non-existent. I have also heard that nIdu caraNamulE is not the Saint's, but I was not too sure.

Bilahari, yes, mukhAri is VK's (and Prashant's too I believe) favorite rAga...

Kedharam - I have to thank you - all your passionate reviews of Sri Sanjay's concerts were what spurred me to ensure that I attended this one.

Rshankar, too bad u missed today's concert. i hope someone will write their review of this, if not I will get to it by wednesday. One of the most amazing experiences.....RTP in Priyadarshini.....a one hr extravaganza studded with 7 of the choicest ragas....surely a thing of beauty! As he sang in his virutam, it is possible to walk on water! Today, Sanjay, Varadu and Venkatesh showed how it is done....

Sanjay started this concert with a lovely varnam in Chakravaham .... a simple Adi tala varnam but very sweet, and I am still humming it. Does anyone have the notation in English, would love to learn it up.
