What a wonderful concert this was!! A lot of them were hearing Sri Surya Prakash for the very first time. With a powerful voice he started the concert with a slOkam. Singing kalpanAsvarams for the very first kriti itself made the audience sit up and listen, and, they probably knew what was to come. From then on he enthralled the audience of 30-40 people for the next three hours with excellent choice of ragas and kritis, and manodharma. And off course with great support and excellent playing by Sri Raghavendra Rao and Sri Murugabhoopati, this team deserved loud applauses. At the end he commented that for this kind of audience he would like to give a 5 h concert. That speaks of the stamina he held throughout the concert. Overall I think his control of laya and the style of singing svarakalpana, makes him quite unique.

I enjoyed the vasanta ragAlapana and the svarakalapana. I correctly identified the raga saraswati- I wrote down 4-5 times saraswati and only once vAcaspati which is its mEla. I heard the vAgISwari kriti for the first time. Suryaprakash presented a fantastic neraval at nIvE jIva Sakti.
SaudararAjam -bRndAvana sAranga was sublime. I was just floating away with the flow of the kriti.

He presented the sarasa sAma dAna kriti starting from anupallavi and followed it with mindblowing svaraprastAram at hitavu mATalento.

The highlight of the concert was surely kIravAni which lasted for exactly one hour! Svaras were presented at bAguga in his signature style-simply excellent. Tani was fabulous with interesting nadais I cannot name them but could recognize the shift from one to the other. But I don’t know what happened at the end. They all ended after the korvai? And TKM continued to play again and then there was another ending after a minute :)

This was followed by a rAgamAlika viruttam, and once he started kalyANavasantam I knew what was to follow. It was ARASI’s inRu varuvAnO nALaiyO- I must say that the small crowd enjoyed this piece very much. I saw them shaking their heads in approval of this wonderful song sung so well.
It was quite funny when he followed this song by singing eppo varuvAro.

The concert concluded with a mangaLam with the priest bringing in the Aarati for the deities-at SrinivAsAya jaya MangaLam.

I got to chat with Suryaprakash before and after the concert. He is the first rasikas.org member I am meeting in person! :) The ease with which he meets rasikas, the willingness to share his knowledge and connect with them is something to be appreciated.
He mentioned that he met VK and Arunk at Chicago concert.

Nice items and HMB compositions are becoming vogue in concerts today. Love to hear the sarasvati piece. Suji, was a recording made, and if not commercial and the artists consent, can you uload the concert?

I guess his compositions are maNipravALam in nature considering his fusing of Sanskrit and kannaDa expressions eg. paripAlisau, tAye etc. although the schism is subtle. The tamizh kritis seem to maintain their distinct language identity. I have not heard any Marathi compositions of bhAgavatar but if there are, they are not contained in the five books published so far. If there's any rasika on this board who's in Delhi, there is a (great?)grand-daughter of bhAgavatar who is a performing artist named Swarnalatha Subramaniam who had documented on audio most of his compositions and she would be able to throw light about his compositions.

HMB's songs can't be termed maNipravALa, anymore than tyAgarAja's 'ela nI daya rAdu' or 'RaghuvIra ranadhIra'..

They are in a different highly sanskritised Kannada, but Kannada nonetheless.
