The concert started exactly at 6.30 pm as announced!

After reading all the wonderful reviews of Sanjay’s concerts my expectations were very high as this was my first of his concert. And I am going to be very brief as lot has already been written about him elsewhere. In short, it exceeded my expectation. What a great, undiluted, extraordinary, sans gimmicks concert it was! I can’t even put it in words.

The concert started with my all time favorite darbAr varnam. A refreshing new mohanam kriti I could only identify the composer as he sang the garbhapurisa mudra. Then a superb rItigauLa"¦. But I must say here that the first few seconds I heard Sriranjani and as I was scribbling down the raga, it became clear it was rItigauLa. It was great to hear janani ninnu vinA live with neraval at dikkevaramma jagamulOna.

Next was kalyANi. And I felt miserable. I did not want to hear this boring raga. But soon I came under the spell of kalyANi :). That’s what Sanjay did. I enjoyed it so much that I even forgot the name of the raga. The kriti nijadAsavarada was a brilliant choice as it brought out his brigha style of singing.

Heard kAyArOhaNESaM for the first time too and it sounded AbhEri as we know it.

The next raga sketch started on higher notes sounding like bRindAvana sAranga but slided all the way down leaving no doubt about the vivAdi swaras in this raga-tAnarUpi which SS announced. The tAnarUpi kriti was handled superbly and with ease.

Then the much awaited RTP arrived. What a treatment of khamAs that was! Sanjay brought out all the emotions -pleading, complaining, arguing, convincing- in singing the AlApana and tAnam. Pallavi was highly sensational. I was glad he did not take a Hindustani raga after listening to this pure carnatic khamAs. I did not miss a rAgamalika in RTP either.

The energy-filled renditions continued into tukkadas"¦.

Varadarajan was very attentive and on par with Sanjay in his replies and matched well in his solos- A very smooth playing indeed. Tani was fast paced and hurried.

I have not given any technical details of this concert because I was enjoying it as a whole.

It was a phenomenal concert!

Your comments will resonate with most of the rasikas who go through similar feelings while in a concert. Thank you suji ram.
