I have fond recollections of listening to Smt. Padma Varadan and her daughter Mathangi perform at their home in Bombay in the early 1980s. Mikeless concert, mami singing and playing: it was hard to distinguish voice from instrument at times. I got a sense of the spell Veena Dhanam must have cast at her musical soirees that we know about from Ranga Ramanuja Ayyangar's writings in History of South Indian Music.
http://vipanci.com links to the Vipanci Charitable Trust set up by Smt. Padma Varadan to propagate the concepts of notation in Carnatic music and keep alive the legacy of her father Sri RR Ayyangar. Do check out the music player with veena-vocal renditions of Smt. Padma, linked on there. One of my favorites is

A very sad news indeed. The music world has lost a wonderful vainika who faithfully followed a rich tradition of veena playing. Her contribution thru the vipanchi trust and publishing her father's monumental works in English is a great service to the carnatic world.
May her soul rest in peace.

I was discussing a few months back with my friend Yessel that we do not organise concerts of many vidwans and vidhushis who have the "real stuff" in themselves. And one of the artists we had identified was Padma Varadhan. Organising her concert any more is impossible.
I have listened to lot of her concerts on AIR and have been amazed at her mastery over the instrument and the "sing along" that comes so naturally to her when she handles the instrument [without of course the famous karoake]. As rightly observed by the rasikas here, many a time both the instrument and the voice would merge creating an enormous and awesome atmosphere of divine music that keeps ringing in your ears. With the loss of this artist of eminence, we are losing one more vainika in a world that has otherwise become short of vainikas.
Our heartfelt condolences to the family of Padma Varadhan.

My sincere condolences. I recollect my association with her as a very genuine student and daughter of a great legend like Ranga Ramanuja Iyengar, and I also had an opportunity to share my thoughts on his magnum opus book, which Vidhushi Padma Varadhan, had taken the pains to translate and bring out the English edition, at the launch function at the Music Academy, Madras. In fact, I bought the first official copy right at the launch function. I shall cherish this musical treasure. May her soul rest in peace.
