Many of India's eminent scientists have been great connoisseurs of classical arts as well. But it is for the first time that an active classical arts performer is to head India's space programme. Dr K Radhakrishnan, the incumbent chairman of Indian Space Research organisation (ISRO) is an active Kathakali artiste as well as a Carnatic musician who continues to perform along with professionals in both fields.

He started learning Kathakali and Carnatic music from his young days, Radhakrishnan still takes lessons in both. The characters he likes playing most in Kathakali -Kerala's famed dance drama- Bheem in "Kalyanasaugandhikam and Hanuman in "Lavanasuravadham" plays.
