It was the inauguration concert for the Kamakoti Gana mandir, the new renovated mini hall at Krishna Gana Sabha. His Holiness Jagadguru Kanchi Mahaswamigal traveled here to grace the inauguration function. Two revered institutions most of us have grown up with having a rich history of serving the community at large over many decades. Both subject to varying degrees of recent criticism largely due to self-inflicted damage leaving a less than wholesome taste in the mouth. The mantle fell on Smt. Gayathri Girish to put the recent events in perspective against the glory of the past and help us hope for better times in the future. Without leaving an inkling of doubt in the mind of anyone present(*), she came through. And here is how. The main piece of the concert was Sri Chandrasekharam Yatheendram Bhaje in majestic Shankarabharanam composed by N.S.Ramachandran(**). An elaborate alapana tailored to the kriti with long kaarvais set the mood for this rare Sanskrit composition. Sahana was chosen for sub-main and Thooran's Enna Perum Thavam also about the Maha Kanchi periyavar was presented. Many items were prefaced with slokams and viruthams. From the start to the finish, one could see the thought and care that went into presenting this program. While the pre-main part of the program was steeped in classicism, the post-main once again unearthed a rare composition of Mayuram Viswanatha Sastry. The final Ponnar Meniyane in kurinji was presented with the same intensity and poise and even more sangathis than the opening invocation to Sidhi Vinayaka.

*: Unfortunately the hall was not as packed as one might have hoped. Sadly the occuapancy rate at the canteen outside far exceeded the concert hall.

**: N.S.R kriti I am hearing for the first time. I was expecting Shankaracharyam but was delighted to be shown wrong.
