Smt Gayathri Girish - Vocal
Shri BU Ganesh Prasad - Violin
Shri Mannarkoil J Balaji - Mrudangam
Shri Adambakkam Shankar - Ghatam

Date : December 2, 2009
Venue : RK Swamy Hall

1) Chalamela - Nattaikurinji Pada Varnam - OS
2) Teliyaleru Rama - Dhenuka
3) Marivere - Anandabhairavi - AS
4) Vanchathonu - Karnaranjani
5) Venkataramana - Lathangi - AS
6) Sarasa Samadana - Kapi Narayani
7) Balagopala - Bhairavi - ANST
8) Needhan Thunai - Ragamalika
9) Pazhani Nindra - Kapi
10) Mangalam

It was a nice list. The Nattaikurinji Varnam had a good round of Swarams. The Dhenuka piece is always emotive to me and was rendered well. Liked the use of the lower octave by the violinst here. Provided a good contrast. And the anticipation of the Mrudangam artiste all through, more so, for the DNS PDNS SNDPM Ila Nanthata Prayogam provided a good aural experience.

It has been quite a while since I heard a detailed Anandabhairavi. The Shyama Sastri piece was preceded by a good Alapanai and nice usage of the Antara Gandharam Prayogams. The Swarams in the first speed were in line with the mood of the song. Lathangi was rendered well and after the fillers, it was a calm Bhairavi. Liked the violinist's version as well. The Swarams here at two Eduppus Neela and Sharira were sung well with nice patterns. The Tani that followed was good. If I recollect right, Shri Balaji started off on the same pattern as the final Korvai sung by the vocalist, and improvised well on it.

Post Tani, the Ragamalika, that was a request, was sung well.

Overall, a concert that was well measured with no excesses. Was satisfying.

thank you for the nice coverage.
You are right. I just started off the korvai on the same lines of GG and did an on the spot improvisation.

She sang

1 ) 7 (4) + 7 (4) + 7 (4) poorvangam with 5 (4 + 4 ) + 5 (4 + 4 ) + 5 as utharangam
2) 7 (2) + 7 (2) + 7 (2) poorvangam with 7 (4 + 4 ) + 7 (4 + 4 ) + 7 as utharangam
3) 7 + 7 + 7 poorvangam with 9 (4 + 4 ) + 9 (4 + 4 ) + 9 as utharangam

i just modified the above korvai and played the following :

1 ) 7 (4) + 7 (4) + 7 (4) poorvangam with 5 (4 + 4 ) + 5 (4 + 4 ) + 5 as utharangam
2) 7 (3) + 7 (3) + 7 (3) poorvangam with 6 (4 + 4 ) + 6 (4 + 4 ) + 6 as utharangam
3) 7 (2) + 7 (2) + 7 (2) poorvangam with 7 (4 + 4 ) + 7 (4 + 4 ) + 7 as utharangam

The one and 3 of my korvai is the same as one and two of GG but made a small difference in the kaarvai to make it look different.

Sir, what do the brackets mean? like where u say 7(4)?

I would also appreciate it if you could explain the terms poorvangam and utharangam.
Thanks :)

Poorvaangam utharaangam are well explained in Tala Laya Thread under structuring a korvai subtitle. that 4 or 3 in brackets means kaarvai or gap ...(Musical Pause)
