In the alapana of sriranjani, after subjecting the DNA of the raga to intense decoding came Ramalinga swamigal's composition of social reform, “JathielE madangalilE samaya nerigalilE sAthira sandadigalilE gOthira sandailE bringing to light in all eloquence how after years after the composer's life, individual dignity and humanity are still relevant with small intonations acquiring new poetry in the rendition"¦
His graceful interpretation of kannada was followed by the gem of a composition of Swathi thirunal, "kalayAmi kridhi nanda kamanIya bhAlam"

The shruti bedam led to Shudhdha Dhanyasi not hindolam.
Special mention about his Nayaki alapana which was sedate and filled with emotion.Very rarely U come across such attempts.Who else can do such things other than the inimitable TNS ?
Though he had shruti problems here and there that didn't deter the veteran from delivering the best.
A very good concert.

Kedharam wrote - dwelling on each note, curve, and phrase, with his soaring vocalization radiating an earthy richness in the middle register with his melodic and artistic intelligence approximately in equal measure with melting beauty completely absorbing himself in the aesthetic aura of kalyani. The alluring alapana had an organic evolution with wondrous delicacy through sancharas in foghorn depth and almost reaching a stately upper octave as splendid karvais emerged and evaporated unearthing different layers of its appeal at which point came a segue into hindolam thro sruthi bedam followd by "thalli ninnu nera"

Kedaram--OUTSTANDING Review--I was there-I could not have conveyed what you have done--not even 10%. I agree with Purist--the sruthi bedam was Suddha danyasi .YES the Panchamam of the lower octave made me reminisce about MDR's deep baritone voice. The ability to plumb the lower notes with clarity and precision is the true hallmark of an outstanding musician.
I also find his voice was not cooperative with the sruthi and perhaps may hav even limited his imagination.
Anyway Rasikas in Chennai--listen to as many concerts of TNS--because his voice may not strand the strain.
Great artiste--commendable erudition.
Narendran's Mridangam was subdued sedate and sensitive--a sharp contrast to the previous day's Gayathri V's concert where Tiruvarur Viadyanathan "blasted" the Mridangam so much that I saw Nandikeshwar from the adjacent Kapali Temple rushing to the Bhavan Hall lamenting"Ayyayyo,I never intended my mridangam to be played in this manner!!
One of my sworn missions during this Festival series is to keep harping on this theme of "Tame the Mridangists"--It is a Pakka Vadyam NOT Pakkaaa Vadhyam(Palghat Mani Iyer's quote-not mine!!).

Ramasubramanian,
Used to be my pet peeve too--mridangam blasting! It is worse when even the skilled most pakka becomes pukkA and damages our ear drums.
Looking forward to meeting you and Nirmala on the 20th morning at Nageswaran's home.
As for Kedharam, he simply sizzles.
Kedharam,
Great review. I wish to meet you at one of the concerts at least. Please let me know which concerts you plan to attend, and we can say hello to each other in one of them. Send me a mail through the forum and tell me if you will be wearing a blue shirt/checked shirt etc. If you know me from the forum pics, then you can easily find me.
