The ethereal 25-minute reflective alapana was elaborated gradually revealing different facets of thodi’s codified structure showcasing the varied view of the raga’s melodic personality, antiquity and emotional content in the most introspective fashion thro sustained karvais, with the prayogas slipping in with calm deliberation for a resounding ovation as he dwelled in each octave"¦. that segued into mohana kalyani thro sruti bedam"¦paving the path for "kArthikEya kAngEya gowri thanaya"

It is always a gamble to attend the concert of TNS either I get a feeling of WOW or why Did I go , two polarized feelings in the last few years. To me this concert was somewhat in between .Usually TNS takes a considerable time to warm up, but I felt his rAsAli krithi popularized by lalgudi school with swaras with a brief rAga was a bright start to me this was the best number for its consistency in this concert.
sahAnA turned out to be just good ,the voice was not in a fine shape at few places the sheen of sahAna was lost , the krithi was quite good but he made up well in the swaras with few manodharmic sangathi patterns ,the neraval was good but overall this concert was neraval deficient. The next number was poor, hameerkalyAni was too much of shruthi lapse and I did not like it , the pasupathipriya is a fast number with two rounds of cittaswaras he was just ok.
TOdi alApanai was very good and very expansive , though at few sangathis in the beginning had a bit of voice problems there were few sangathis that were musically intense with long karvais and it had a lot of nAdaswara piDi . While I agree somewhat with the tOdi alApana view of kedharam , I feel the krithi rendition was just ok i did not notice any imagery or storytelling there as kedharam , he was bit disjoint at lots of places , the gamaka slopes that came out well in alApanai was not matching well with tOdi krithi of shivan. Swaras were creative with a first round in slower pace for about 5 minutes ,there was a bit of kanakku with just repetion of s r g m p d n s in both directions , thank god the kanakku was brief ,then it was few rounds of long swara cycles which were lovely.
The viruththam in bEgaDa was just good, though surprised with applause rounds there and hindOlam was very nice , he moved to a vishnu sahasranamam slokham in a raga hamsanandi which he usually excels (but not this time) and then went to mishra soorya??. The meera bhajan was definitely well rendered to me the first and last were the best in terms of consistency . I am assuming the meera bhajan is in the rAgam mishra soorya?? as I heard the same some time before with sandeep narayan's concert , there was a lot of ustad hindustani touch there. Surprisingly the popular hamsanandi thiruppugazh was clear usually we only hear the lyrics of the first line and then perumAle .
About the accompanist:
---------------------
# MC was just good overall , his bowing in sahANA alApanai was scratchy perhaps he was following TNS there as a shadow, the tOdi was just good ,his swara returns were very good most of the time
# VR in mridangham has his pluses and minuses . The plus is with his sarvalaghu style he completely eliminates TNS kanakkku oriented style , the minus is his patterns are too raw at times the singer has to compensate for him and sing his sangathis around vk's style of play.Tani was too brief , it was little continuation of the song.
The concert was scheduled to start at 06:45 pm but it started only at 07:10 pm, the delay of 25 minutes is simply unacceptable , the crowd was moving out in hordes after 08:30 pm , but there were few die hard fans of TNS who were cheering for the entire 2 hours and 15 minutes concert
Overall a good to very good concert

Balu,
No. They are two different people. If you read the reviews regularly, you would know for yourself. One is a Chennai resident, the other a season visitor from abroad. Both write very picturesquely, but you will notice that Kedharam writes about concerts of different artistes while SR reviews only concerts of TNS. By the way, Saroja is Saroja while Kedharam's real name could be Kedaranathan or Kumaran!
Rajesh,
How does one describe your reviews? They are unique and your delivery direct. And the stuff you know!
Two reviews, each special in its own way about a master.
Our reviewers are the best bunch in the business.

Pleaee note that I always wrtie in my own name and do not have different IDs. Moreover I stopped sending my reviews to this forum long ago. I visited now only after someone told me that my name came up in the forum. I shall be thankful if the members do not refer to me or to my writings anymore in this forum.
