Ah the beauty of sanskrit - nAga is more commonly used to mean a snake; it would fit kishNa lIlA with respect to kAliya nartanam, but krishNa subdued kALIya, without killing him, so, it would not fit 'samhAra' that follows, hence, one has to invoke the less common meaning or nAga in this case - the elephant; kuvalayApIDa, the mad elephant that was killed by krishNa just before he entered the wrestling hall in mathura to meet kamsa.

Awesome, Rajani!!

Thanks Ravi. Actually Samhara would literally mean control/take over etc. Hence "Soorasamharam" even though Muruga never killed Soora. I couldn't agree more about the facility in Sanskrit for many such nuances.
