Neyveli Santhanagopalan at Nungambakam Cultural Academy at Rama Rao Kalyana Mantap at 7.00 P.M.on 10 Dec 09.

Neyveli was ably accompanied by Sri.V.V.Ravi on the violin, Shri Tiruvaru Bhakthavalsalam on the Mridangam, Shri K.V.Gopalakrishnan on the Kanjira.

1. Varnam- Thodi
2. Girirajasutha- Bangala- Adi - Tyagaraja -
Outline of raga, swaras in Gananaada- first line of Charanam.
3. Teliyaleru rama- Denuka- Adi - Tyagaraja -

Rendering of the Keertana was very soulful and swaras were very good
4. Hecharikagaa raa -Yadukulakamblodi - Khandachapu

5 Sabhapathikkyu veru deivam - Abogi- Adi- Gopalakrishna Bharathi
only keertana
6. Natajanapalini Nalinakanthi- Nalinakanthi -Adi-Tanjore Sankara Iyer
Santhanagopalan announced that this was a request from VV Ravi to which Bhakthavalsalam also joined in the request.
Raga alapana was very good and violin was excellent. Alapana of the vocalist was for 6 minutes and that of violin 4 minutes. The swaras were very good and there were many rounds of npmgri in three octaves. Swaras were rendered in Khanda nadai also.
7. Koluvai unnade- Bhairavi-Adi-Tyagaraja
Raga alapana for 7 minutes and violin return for 4 minutes. The alapana was good and not great. The keertana was rendered excellently. There was no neraval and swaras rendered at Manasu ranjilla. The swaras were not very elaborate. This was followed by an excellent Thani for about 25 minutes.
8. Krishnanamarasa - I did not stay for this song and hence could not identify the raga. I had to leave as my son was having examination and I had to sit with him.

This was a good concert. The concert started in time. Neyveli's voice was coarse in the beginning but by third song it was good. There was good understanding among all the artists and they complimented each other on various occasions. Shri. V.V.Ravi provided very good violin support and his alapanas were very pleasing and soulful. The mridangam by Tiruvarur Bhakthavalsam was very good and embellished the concert. But personally, I found that it was loud. But people enjoyed and it was a welcome sight that nobody left during the long thani. Rasikas applauded on each round. The Ganjira artist also gave very good support and at one point, Bhakthavalsalam announced that he will be the future Ganjira Star. During the Thani, Neyveli profusedly thanked the audience for listening with much involvement and he said:Neengal ellam enga rasikarkal. Naangal ellam ippo ungal rasikarkal.

I was hearing Neyveli Santhanagoapalan after a very long time and this was a good concert.

Thank you for the review, CRama. I'm surprised there was only one neraval in the concert - it is one of NSG's fortes!

Doesn't seem like there would've been enough time for another one...!

Shri Bhakthavatsalam announced that K V Gopalakrishnan will be the future Khanjira Star??? I am quite surprised as K V G to my knowledge has been playing Khanjira since 2002 and has been playing Mridangam since 1992. So I consider him already to be a star.
