In keeping with our tradition of promoting Carnatic music through innovative concepts, Carnatica has come up with yet another pioneering attempt - the Rasika Awards 2009. Conceptualized by Carnatica's Founder-Director Vidwan Shri K.N.Shashikiran, the Rasika Awards aim to encourage rasikas to attend as many concerts as possible in the December Music Season and also review them objectively.

The Awards will be presented in two categories - Rasika Shiromani and Rasika Pro.

Rasika Shiromani:

This contest is for the best reviews. Rasikas must attend concerts and send in their reviews. The rasikas who write the best reviews will be awarded cash prizes.

Rasika Pro:

In this contest, rasikas who attend the maximum number of concerts will be awarded prizes. Song lists must be complete in all respects - they must include the name of the song, ragam, talam, composer and manodharma details (alapana, tanam, neraval, kalpanaswarams).

To participate in these contests, you can do either of the following:

1. Fill in the entry forms available in Sri Krishna Sweets outlets in Chennai and Carnatica's office, attach details of the concerts attended and submit them at Carnatica’s office:

Srishti’s Carnatica Private Limited
Jammi Building, No. 60, Royapettah High Road,
Mylapore, Chennai - 600 004

2. E-mail the details of the concerts attended to Carnatica at [email protected], along with the following information:

a. Name
b. Address
c. Phone

Prizes in both categories:

First Prize - Rs. 10,000
Second Prize - Rs. 5,000
Three Third Prizes - Rs 2,000 each

(I daresay many of the regular reviewers in our forum are strong contenders for the prizes!)

Prizes to be sponsored by Hallmark Properties.

Guidelines:

1. Only concerts attended from the 10th to the 30th of December will be considered.
2. 60% of the marks will be allotted for afternoon concerts and lecture demonstrations.
3. Concerts will be considered as attended only if the rasika stays at least until the end of the main piece.
4. For every concert, the song list/review must include the names of all performers, venue, time and theme, if any.
5. If the rasika does not recognize a song or a ragam or does not know the composer, he/she can consult someone who does.
6. Only one entry is allowed per person; multiple entries from the same family are allowed.
7. One person can compete in both contests - Rasika Shiromani & Rasika Pro.
8. Entries will be considered only if contact details and song lists are complete in all respects.
9. Last date for receipt of entries: 11 pm, 30th December, 2009

If you have any questions, please post them here. I'll be glad to answer them.

Carnatica also has a long list of other interesting activities lined up for this Season. I'll post the details soon. Looking forward to your support!

To be grammatically (sanskrit) correct it must be
shiras + maNi = shirOmaNi = respected title to a learned man!

Thank you. I've edited the post.

Just looked it up in Tyagaraja Swami's Todi composition Dasarathi Nee Runamu also, where he calls Rama 'rasika shirOmaNi'.

A very good idea and nice contest.

BTW, There are several rasikas who do not write reviews on any forum.

One of my friends, who makes an yearly pilgrimage to Chennai for the December season from December 1st week till January 1st week, had attended 150+ concerts. He had noted down in his diary all the songs rendered of every concert he attended.

Hello everyone. It appears Carnatica is awarding the best rasikas for the season. They have some kind of innovative approach to do this that I thought is cool.

Although Sashikiran explained this to me, I guess Nivedita or someone else close to Carnatica will be better able to take any questions that you may have.

Please find the application form and instructions attached herewith and direct your queries in this thread so the concerned persons can explain them away.

My tiny contribution to this giant exercise is to convert the application form from Office 2007 (.docx format) to Office 2003 (.doc format) so it is reachable to a wider base of rasikas :D

Carnatica - it might be easier to use google docs form to collect data of this magnitude in real time and process it in a spread sheet.

Ramanathan, if you need help let me know, will be happy to set this up for you. This sure is a good initiative.
