Hi all,

I was directed to this interesting community of Carnatic rasikas by a friend. I'm currently visiting Chennai for the music season (yay) but am supposed to do a project about some interesting experiences during this trip when I go back (grr). My grandfather buys all the newspapers that Chennai boasts of. I was looking at the Carnatic coverage in each newspaper and that gave me an idea for my project. I thought I would take a rasika poll that answers the following questions. I have divided the questions in various sections.

A.

1. What are the newspapers that you buy?

2. Is your choice of newspaper based on the Carnatic coverage in it?

3. Do you buy any specific newspaper just during the season for its Carnatic coverage?

B.

1. How much of the Carnatic stuff do you actually end up reading in these newspapers?

2. How much of your concert choices are affected by the coverage in these newspapers?

3. Do you read concert reviews or do you just skim through them?

4. If you said Yes to the above, how much weightage do you give to these reviews?

5. Do you assume that a good headline with a picture of the artiste means that the review is a positive one?

6. Do you think the coverage and reviews are done in a fair manner?

C.

1. Do you think coverage of Carnatic music could improve?

2. If you said Yes to the above, please describe in a few words what improvements you would like to see.

I wish to thank the rasikas in advance and hope that at least a handful of you will take the time to answer the above.

Some one should help smriti to create a poll web so everyone can go there and answer those mostly closed end questions.

Sri. Shashikiran, thank you for the prompt response and ready help. I would prefer it if rasikas responded right here so that I can take a print-out of this page as part of my project. It will give authenticity to my process and also help me compile my data first-hand. Rasikas, please take the time to do this.

If it helps, I would like answers in the following format. Here is a sample answer sheet:

A

1. The Hindu, Indian Express, Times of India
2. Not really
3. Yes, the Indian Express

... and so on. Thank you all in advance.

All, It looks like Smriti requires some minimum number of responses for the project ( like 10 ). Please take a few minutes and send your views on the questions using forum email. Thanks.

Smriti needs very specific information for a very specific purpose. Personally, I am quite intrigued by the survey mentioned in Sri. Shashi Kiran's post. Are you planning to publish summarized results of this survey somewhere (your website, newspapers etc.,) later, or can you tell us here? I assume you'd have many responses, and the data would be very helpful for people away from Chennai (to know which newspapers or magazines to read, how much to trust each one etc.,)

Good luck to Smriti. I however suggest that Smriti should attend 5 different concerts and make two interviews with rasikas over there in each concerts.

@ Sreenadh, the quality of reviews and the bias towards certain artistes that is obvious even to someone like me, I would only trust my ears and not the reviews!

@ VK Raman, the only problem with doing what you suggest is that I am not a good solicitor. I also feel that rasika-s are already quite harried and harassed at every Sabha. Should I add to their woes? ;)

I would prefer to get the replies here itself. At this point, I would even take it post-season as my project is not due till Jan 11. Thanks again!

smriti: People who are not in India may not think some of the questions are applicable to them. So make it clear if you want responses from them or not.
