rasikas meet @nAgeshwaran's house on Dec 20th 2009
-------------------------------------------------

Attendees :
VKV, MKR and his wife nirmala, arasi , cienu, gamakam,semmu86, jayaram , me , violinist aishu and her family, nAgeshwaran and family , violinsts dr narmada and vs narasimhan and Liam Neeson ;).

# VKV is a perfectionist and he was our MC. He has a clock like precision and always gives enough time for each and also keeps overall the sense of proportion so that it does not become like our speeches before concerts in sabhas

# After welcoming all of us by the generous host nAgeshwaran. NAgeshwaran's granddaughter srinidhi sang four numbers , srinidhi sang 3 new numbers and a fourth famous number ,she just sings very open throated and all were very good with valachi being the top pick

1A.devAram in nAttai more like a viruththam
1B. shri rAghavam
2. thamarai pAdangaL darisanam - valaci - ganapathiraman (this number is popularized by nityashree)
3. Ek rAdha Ek meerA - bhajan??? - latamangeshkar album
4. kAkkai chiraginilE - rAgamAligai - bharathiyAr

# MKR and his wife alternated and spoke beautifully about ms ammma and shri sadasivam , the days of their tour in US, humility of MS, the financial trauma that this bharat ratna faced duing the days of her days where she had to move out with her husband from the kalki house to a small house in nungambakkam. Particularly looks like ms ammA was very affectionate for MKR's family.

# VV Sundaram , a great person who tirelessly works in helping carnatic musicians and how he held the cleveland aradhana for years and how he is planning to hold it this year.

# VKV came back in style as a slog order batsman he was critically reviewing the book of TJ George "MS amma biography" that it was close to trash.

# Our arasi madam also spoke few words and in her own style she was thanking the organisations in north america for conducting aradhanas

# We had Aishu's concert then followed with lunch , the day started at 09:30 AM it ended close to 3 pm today.

My personal viewpoints:
---------------------
While the anecdotes of mkr and his wife were more recollections of past , I have nothing to add there excepting to say that they were blessed to be with this great musician.

When VV Sundaram spoke certain thoughts just came to my mind.We are taking lot of steps to improve on growing the supply side of Carnatic music as more and more artists are going to sing , but unfortunately We all dont know (even I dont know what to do, may be few posts here and there in rasikas.org is what each of us do??)how to grow on the demand side of carnatic music, demand is just growing in a trickle where as the supply is exponentially growing.I would love if VVS takes a look more at creating demand side.

Rajeshnat: Nice sumation!! Thanks for your kind comments .Myself and Nirmala enjoyed very much the exchanges. I was afraid both of us may have taken too much of the time, but thanks to all those present you were all patient. Myself and my wife canot stop talking about MS and Mama not because they were good to us but because they were true beacons for all that is GOOD in this World.

VKV did a very good job of "shepherding" the proceedings. VVS was also very gracious given the incredible demands on his time and resources. It would not be an exaggeration to say that what he and his cohorts have achieved in Cleveland is nothing short of a Himalayan task. The troubles and the travails that they have undergone @ great financial/personal sacrifice would itself fill volumes although he has chosen not to talk about it. Ofcourse VVS's wife Gomathi has been a tower of strength to his efforts and the pair's musical passion have made the Cleveland Festival the talk of the World. Ofcourse VKV laid the seeds thro his East-West org in the late Sixties.

Mr.Nageswaran the generous host and his wife,daughter,son-in-law and the grand children --the whole family--we are all indebted to their hospitality- the food was great--esp the Pal Payasam and the jangri .Little Srinidhi sang beautifully with clear diction, perfect layam(without having to slap the thighs) --she has a great future and May God bless her and her family with progressive successes.
Aishu ofcourse dazzled us with her short performance and we are all looking forward to her meteoric rise under the tutleage of Prof. S.R. Janakiraman

Arasi the epitome of modesty--for the scholarship and interest she has continued to demonstrate thro these columns, was terse, and succinct and expressed how the NA listeners are grateful to VKV and VVS for their efforts to popularise CM in NA.

Altogether thanks to the rasikas we all had a good time.
After the music season I shall start my Semmangudi Mama saga which is such a massive canvas to paint on that would stymie a Michaelangelo!! I will attempt it anyway. Fools Rush in where Angels fear to tread!!

WOW
What a get together with the 'doers' and 'dreamers' of CM!
Pl provide audio/script for the talks given so we can enjoy our remote participation.
Photos will be nice too!
Did her majesty 'sing' :) (not a joke! she has to shake off her last inhibition!)
I am sure VKV and MKR will share more of their thoughts with us here..
It will be nice to have VVS too at this Forum! (Of course he is a busy man!)
Thanks to Nageswaran for bringing you all together!
What were the personal comments from cienu? (Does he agree with all the 'second hand' comments :)
Now a big thanks to you Rajesh for reporting to us!
What! No cool :(

rajeshnat,
thanks for giving a detailed report of the rasikas meet. It is a pity that I could not meet you while I was at chennai a few days back. Thanks a lot for getting the CDs for me.
Anyway I am happy that I managed to recognise arasi in the MA canteen and spent about 20 minutes with her and Mr.Krishnan.

It was a day to remember, not only in our minds, but in our hearts too. Seriously, I feel quite moved whilst reading Rajeshnat and MKR's description, and the bonus is that I was actually there!

I began the day with a slight misgiving: MSS's status I do not doubt, but how much would the talk mean to me, as a youngster in the music? I should have had no concerns, for all the speakers were captivating.

One comment re VKV's reaction to T. S George's book, which I think he described, among other things, as a great example of how not to write a book... He did choose to end his speaking with a quote from the book which he appreciated, and the comment that it was not all bad.

Srinidhi sang with confidence and sweetness. Her voice is rich and mellow for one of her age. Next time, I'd like to see her provided with a violinist and a mridangist, for she has the vocal strength to cope.

I was very touched to be invited by Aishu's father to play Kanjira with them. If only I had had a box of morsings in the car, I might have accepted to contribute a few twangs. Aishu gave a lovely performance, with the TNK sound obvious from the first touch of the bow.

It was really nice to get to speak to Dr Narmadha, as I have never met her before.

Lots of other people that it was good to see and to speak to.

Our hosts provided delicious tea in the morning, and an excellent lunch. The food was all delicious, full of flavour, but not too full of kaaram. There are not words sufficient to thank Nageshwaran and his family for their hospitality and work towards making this event happen.

It has been a remarkable weekend for me, as it has been Three-Forum Weekend! Yesterday, a number of members of indiamike.com (a travel and Indian culture site) went to Mamallapuram for lunch and an afternoon of exploring. Today, rasikas ...and, on the way home, as they were meeting at a sea-side location not far from my house, I joined with some members of Team-BHP.com, an Indian cars and driving forum.

It all goes to show that the internet is not just about spending long, anti-social, hours in front of a computer!

bilahari , even the attendees are looking forward to the pics :) . MKR sir and cienu sir will upload it for sure i think . First of all , big thanks to Mrs and Mr. Nageswaran , their daughter , for taking the trouble to host an entire lot of rasikas for almost an entire day . Srinidhi sang beautifully , and as MKR sir said , even without puttinh thalam , her sense of laya proportion was just perfect . Both she and her little sister ( kamala ) were dressed up beautifully too . Then the wonderful speeches by Mrs and Mr. MKR , VKV sir , VVS sir , their long association with MS/TS family , just didnt realise so much time infact passed away .

Ofcourse , Aishu's concert was one which i enjoyed throughly . Esp the bilahari , the trademark stamp of TNK .. Too bad , couldnt talk to her after the concert , but anyways looking forward to attend one of her concerts this season .. Was absolutely wonderful that i got to meet arasi . Was thinking to talk to her during lunch , but guess she left halfway through the concert . It was a wonderful lunch , esp the jangri .. It was once again a memorable morning , and no amount of words can thank the Nageswarans for making this happen .

Arvind .

I missed meeting Arasi, gamakam and srinivargvn and VVS as I could come in only when Aishu Venkataraman was well into the latter part of Todi. It is truly wonderful to see this immensely talented youngster perform. She is a worthy inheritor of the TNK bani. Jagadhodharana and Nottuswara too were beautifully played. The hospitality of the Nageswaran family was touching and though I did not hear the young girl Srinidhi sing the invocation, from what I could gather from the others, I am sure she has a good future in music. The lunch was excellent. I did take 2 snaps only and would therefore request others to upload their pictures too.

It was a great pleasure to meet VKV, MKR and his wife, Rajesh, Semmu and Nick and Jayaram.

Once again I express my deep appreciation and heartfelt thanks to Sri Nageswaran, Anuradha and Sriram for their kindness and hospitality.

The first picture is my daughter Aishwarya with Aishu Venkataraman
The second picture:
From left to right
Sriram (son in law of Nageswaran), Rajeshnat, Semmu, my sister Lakshmi, my daughter Aishwarya, Mrs MKR & Sri MKR.

I wish I could have stayed back and listened the concetrt completely. Also, that would have given me some more time to know the forum members better. I came late and had to leave early. So, there wass hardly a chance to even get introduced.

May be next time.

It was thoroughly enjoyable day.

HaHa

Actually requested both of them to stand in such a way that I could capture Mother's image too, as I am a great devotee of her.
Somehow was under the wrong impression that Srinivasrgvn had come for this meet. Hope to meet him too sometime this season :)

Many thanks cienu, Nick (and advance ones for those yet to come).
I love the serious look of VKV orchestrating the session and the relaxed MKR taking in the proceedings. Nice to see the animated looks of VVS. Nick, you have captured the spirit.
cienu's line-up is nice and I wish to have seen more in the line-up (especially missing Her Majesty!).
Where is our Nageshvaran hiding :)

read your blog. Very valid points. George has failed to distinguish facts from fiction! He is no historian (though he tries to wear that mantle) but nothing but a cheap 'yellow journalist'! I would have loved to hear VKV (who is a scientist) taking him to the laundry! He and MKR should actually write a dispassionate monograph to set the facts straight . They are doing a great job here at the Forum!

In the first photograph that nick uploaded , you can see srinidhi singing assisted by her sister and their mom (Shri nageshwaran's daughter Smt anurAdhA).In the right side frame is nAgeshwaran sir and in the left side is VKV. The moral of the photo "If you dont wear glasses you will have red eyes, if you have glasses you will be the one eyed jack" ;)

In the third photograph that nick uploaded where VKV is seated in between Mrs MRK and VV sundaram , the girl in the right side (only her face is captured ) is aishwarya's younger sister.

In the but last photograph you can see aishu , her dad and her mom . The gentleman who is seated in a chair wearing a blue jean with a red shirt is VS narasimhan the violinist. YOu can also see nAgeshwaran who is seated slightly behind in an adjancent room. Between nAgeshwaran sir and VS Narasimhan is a forumite who reads all the posts in our forum but does not write a single post . He participates in most of our get together but he is the actively passive poster. (Let us see if he breaks his silence with this post ;))

I should have recognized half a Nageswaran. mea culpa :)

I should again have recognized VS narasimhan even if a quarter/t of him was visible. His mokshamu galada has won all our hearts as well as his Ragasaga. He perhaps has chosen to talk to us through his melodies which we appreciate in our hearts. But then words from him will be equally precious.

Sir:
A red carpet welcome to your Forum debut!

Thanks Arvind
for the different view with VKV doing business and that of Her Majesty!

Thanks to gamakam , Semmu86, Rajeshnat, Cienu and others for their nice write-ups and pictures.
Every one of you is contributing for the preservation of Carnatic Music. It was nice of the Nageswaran family to host this event. VVS and VKV have done so much for us who live here in exile- Like Sri Anjaneya who brought Sanjeevi mountain, they brought Carnatic Music to us. Looking forward to more pictures.

Get together meeting of Rasikas on 20.12.2009-REPORT 01

The get together meeting at my residence on 20.12.2009 went off well. A good number of Rasikas attended the meeting.

I have decided to foot the bill on the catering services and sufficient food was ordered.
The menu was
1. Sambar sadam.
2. Potato curry.
3. Pappadam.
4. Vadai
5. Pal Payasam.
6. Thayir Sadam.
7. Vadu Mangai. And
8. Narthalai Podi.

Mrs.Arasi, Narmada and few of the Rasikas left before taking the lunch[In spite of my requests].

The programme started with with prayer and songs by my grand daughter Miss Srinidhi.
After the welcome speech by the u/s, Sri V.K.Viswanathan gave an introductory speech.
Sri M.K.Ramasubramanian and his wife Mrs.Nirmala narrated their long and intimate relationship with M.S.Amma and Sadasivam.

Sri V.K.Viswanathan then spoke about the wrong information’s printed in some books about M.S.Amma.

Sri Cleveland Sundaram informed the Rasikas as to how the Cleveland Aradana festivals started way back in 1966 /1967 and its present growth. The unbiased selection of the artists for per performing at Cleveland was explained in detail.

The grooming of young budding artists in USA through the training by veteran musicians through Skyp was also explained by Sri Sundaram. The spirit with which Sri Sundaram is dedicating his services in spreading of Carnatic music is to be applauded.

Some how introduction of the Rasikas was not done and I could not recognize a few of the Rasikas, If Arvind or Rajesh can point out the Rasikas from the available photos, I would be thankful to them.
