After having attended concerts innumerable, ventured in to MFA on an evening when the sky opened in to a downpour during the concert.Unlike the sky , the concert was far from gloomy. It was a good 3 hour concert instead of the 1 1/2 to 2 hour `typical season concert'.- ideal for sabha hoppers. But for someone like me who took off from work and was looking for staple , heavy fare, this was an ideal concert and very refreshing.

The vocalists Sesha chary and Raghavachary were accompanied by Mysore Nagaraj on the violin, Kamalakar Rao(mridangam) Ghatam?? and Srirangam Kannan on morsing.

The approximate song list was,
Varnam - i missed it, my erudite neighbour told me that it was Kamboji ata thala varnam.
Rakshimpave /mayamalava gowlai/jhampa/ Tyagaraja
Bagayanayya in chandrajyothi(immortalised by BMK)/adi/Tyagaraja
orajoopudu in Kannadagowlai / Adi/tyagaraja sung so delightfully by the brothers.
Hiranmayim in Lalitha/Rupakam/Dikshithar
Tyagaraja's nee balama , naama balama in Ananda bhairavi
Tyagaraja's ethavunnara in kalyani/Adi
Tyagaraja's dandamu pettenura in balahamsa
RTP in Jaganmohini with ragamalika sahana, nilambari, revathi, ranjani.Daya joodave jagan mohini
Hecharika rara in yadukula kamboji by tyagaraja
Nee matale mayanura/poorvi kalyani javali

.This concert broke the myth that the elder Raghavachari sings pratimadyamam always and the younger Sesha chary sings shudda madyamam always.Raghavachary handled the lalitha alapana absolutely beautufully. His voice was clear and sangatis flowed. the krithi itself moved in a royal pace, a befitting ornament for the Devi herself. It was the piece de resistence of the concert- the Alapana, the krithi, the niraval at sangeetha vacha and the kalpana swara. I could barely concentrate on the rest of the songs.
Seshachary handled the prati madyamam raga kalyani. I have heard him sing Kalyani many times and every time he invests his heart and soul in singing this. His sruti bedam i to mohanam drew audience applause.

sesha chary did a enchanting alapana in jagan mohini.I wished it was longer.

The mami behind me was singing bala hamsa dandamu pettenura in a bhajan format in an entirely different raga , quite off key, i must say. I endured it and nee matale mayanura cheered me up.

I am glad that i went to this long concert. As satisfying as a full course meal.(Quoting kural, chevikkum, vayirtrirkkum unavu!)

The violinist Mysore nagaraj played soothing violin, especially in lalitha, matching the artist's mood. The sancharas in kalyani reflected joy. I expected a very long thani given the fact that it was a full bench but it was not too long. Srirangam kannan stole the show. I always wonder who next, after him , to claim his place for the morsing.

Sounds like an outstanding concert. Naganna would have outdone himself in Chandrajyothi and Lalitha!
