Oh members of the music academy...here is a concert that you have all missed. A concert that transports one to a all new dimension. A dimension that one has only dreamed about.
Vijayalakshmy's concert was simply outstanding. After Unnikrishnan, the people who stayed back were simply kept spellbound. she started with the begada varanam followed by dikshithars Ekambresha nayeka in karanataka shudha saveri. This simply set the mood. With a very delightful nalinakanthi with GNB'S Nee paadme she went on to sing amma ra vamma in Kalayani. A glimpse of Kambodhi with Oothukadus Vaangum Ennakku, was another treat. In between you got to hear a rare Tyagaraja Krithi in Dundubi.

A very scintillating Keeravani transported you to another dimension altogether. That was not all A RTP in Natakurunji in a new tala Gati Trayam. Natakurunji ragam was rendered so sweetly that one can just sit there awestruck.

The virutham followed by arul seeya of Koteeswara Iyer in Rasikapriya Made me want to scream out " oh lord give her the arul
The Meera Bajan in Boopal todi was so refreshing . All this was concluded by the brisk rendering in Amritavarshini the tillana of Dr Balamurli krishna. No one could have done it so nicely.
Let me tell you, There is something in this voice that is magical.

A beautiful concert. Only wish more people would to experience this.

And the pakkavadya vidwans with out whom this concert would not have been this memorable?

* She sang with lot of gathram throughout .
* Undeterred by the waning crowd making mass exodus she went on with good selection of songs.
*Looking into the list of songs I thought it was unuusually too lengthy to cover. She covered it in full with ease.Compromise being kritis in major ragas - Kalyani&Kamboji went without raga elaboration.
* GNB Nalinakanthi piece "Nee padame" this time when I heard- her emphasising lot of swarakshrams(leaving me to wonder What a genius was GNB).By the way every artist should cover atleast one composition of GNB in his centenary year.Sabhas could have been suggestive in this respect .
* Vangum enakku irukai _OVK rare composition on Velan. Swaram @various places like Vadivelan,Mayilerum,Thangai malaimel..... was executed neatly.
*Keervani-Kaligiunde looked to me not complete without neraval @"Baguka Sri raghu Ramuni padamula bhakthi"thanks to the impact of Late.KVN.She could have cut it off for want of time ,sacrificing for the vibrant RTP to follow in the tala "Gathi-Thriyam"for the pallavi'in'" ninadu padame thunai"composed by Prof.B.M.Sundaram in three gathis -Basic kanta rupagam, misram &chatustram.eduppu 11 aksharam thali (reported as heard)in Nattakuringi with R.malika Saraswathy,Lalitha&Durga.
*The viruttam preceding kotiswara Iyer Arulseyyavendum in Rasikapriya in shanmugapriya,Mohanam&Revathy had an emotive touch while rendering "Kai vittu meividumbothu un adaikalam "
*meerabhajan in Bhoopal thodi (tuned by her) came next.
* She signed off with Amritavarshini Thillana of BMK-Is there a ragamalika version of same thillana ?
*Murari was absorbing .His two beautiful children were the added attraction.-One with coolers explaining to my wife(soon after the concert) as to why she is wearing -to induce her to darkness to get the mood to sleep .
*Madrimangalam was looking very supportive &found more enthusiastic during application of new tala.

I apologise for not mentioning the pakavadhims. This memorable concert was made so memorable by VVS Murari on the volin, Madhirimangalam Swaminathan on the mirudangam and AS Krishnan on the Morsing. All of them were ably fantastic. Like mentioned no concert is complete without able support from the accomp. The tani by MSS and expecially AS krishnan on the morsing was splendid. It is difficult to play the morsing with complete alignment with the vocalist. VVS Murari's ragas alapana was very pleasing and complete.

This is the review of this concert in The Hindu. It is absolutely unacceptable that they post a review without a picture of the artist, and shows almost biased conduct on the part of the newspaper since all the other artists' reviews come with their photographs. How will people read it unless they see a photograph and realize that the article contains more than one concert review?

SugarCube: That was a positive review of Vijayalakshmy Subramaniam in the Hindu. Equal column inches for both her and TVS. So there is no evidence of any bias. I agree a picture would have been great and Hindu should do something about that in the future. Let us compensate for that here a litte bit... This is from the Hindu Website..
