Gayathri Girish presented an off-beat but leisurely, soulful and sowkyam-filled concert for Kapali Fine Arts. She was accompanied by V.Sanjeev on the violin and B.Sivaraman on the Mridangam.

The song list:

1. Sri mathrubootham, Kannada, [S]
2. Parvathy Nayakane, Shanmukhapriya
3. Kalyanavasantham, Innudaya baradhe, [N at Sri natha purandara vittala innudaya baradhe dasana meley, S]
4. Valaji, Santhathamu ninne, Adi, GNB
5. Mohanavalli, Manji,
6. Bhajana Seyyave, Kalyani
7. Kaanada, Sukhi Evvaro, [N at Nityamaina Suswaramu ganamuto nirantharamu thyagarajanutha nama, S]
8. Thani
9. Virutham (Orumaiyudan), Reethig-Tillang-Bhavani
10. Unnai andri utra thunai, Bhavani, MMDD
11. Muddugarey yasodha, Kurinji, Annamacharya
12. Chandhanacharchitha, Basant bahar, Ashtapadhi

Casual Observations:

1. Both neravals were outstanding and at non conventional places in the kritis. Neraval was done at a leisurely pace and the bhava laden words were elaborated in a most moving fashion. When presented in this manner, language ceases to be a barrier and one is encouraged to appreciate the commonality in thought and emotion across all of humanity.

2. Three alapanas were presented. The beaten track of so called "ghana" ragas was eschewed for ragas less heard but vast scope. Kaanada alapana was comprehensive and was in excess of 20 minutes including violin return. Sanjeev provided excellent and proportional accompaniment.

3. A comment made by a Senior rasika in his 80's at the hall was, "The best song list I heard in the last 22 days". And this gentleman, a hero for many of us, routinely attends 5 concerts a day and has been for the past 4 decades.

Wow, second instance of a neraval in sukhi evarO in a week! I have heard a recording of MDR singing a brilliant neraval at the thyAgarAjanutha line in this composition.

This was an excellent concert. Would have been even better if the mikes had been in order.
It was a pity that the first three kritis could not be fully enjoyed by rasikas.
It was to GGs credit that she ploughed through and delivered an excellent concert.

Manji, rarely heard, was exceptional. She sang a padam of Kavi Kunjara Bharathi.

As Suresh VV mentioned, the choice of places for neravals showed GG's creativity.

I have heard and enjoyed Sanjeev before, but never heard Sivaraman, whose playing had great energy and sensitivity.

One of the best I heard this season.

Few more observations:

4. Small surprises with the choice of kritis kept the audience guessing and made the concert more interesting like choosing Innudaya baradhe over Nadaloludai or GNB's rare kriti over the more popular kriti from the same school.

5. Not many artistes can elaborate a raga like Bhavani which seems to have so much scope. May be the raga will get promoted to be alapana viable one of these days.

Will any of GG's recordings be released commercially?
