I've been trying to convince my grandfather to join this fun forum but he is not really jumping at the idea of spending any time on the internet than strictly necessary. He prefers his newspapers! I convinced him though to give an account of some of the programs he attended. He says the following about a talk he attended yesterday (notice the difference in language!):

"Trichy Sankaran is a mighty mridanga vidwan who has played for three generations of eminent personalities in the field of Carnatic music. His lecture and demonstration at the Krishna Gana Sabha on the 29th December was a perfect example of humility that comes out of working assiduously in one sphere of work for many decades. Giving wonderful illustrations about his guru and other great masters of the past, he made some very interesting points about different styles of mridangam playing, with particular emphasis on how to approach accompaniment for songs. He stressed that a mridanga vidwan needs to enjoy all aspects of a concert and only then his anticipation will improve. Trichy Sankaran has himself held aloft all these values for many years now and is a strong contender for the Sangeeta Kalanidhi. It is high time that the Academy gave it to him. Students should have been present in large numbers for such lectures but except for a few vidwans like Ravikiran, Srimushnam Raja Rao, Sathishkumar, Neyveli Narayanan and Kiranavali, the attendance was very poor."

No doubt.

Trichy Sankaran is my most favorite mrdanga vidvan. One could say I'm addicted to his playing and specifically look for concerts where he's accompanying...like they say people used to Palghat Mani Iyer and Palani Subramania Iyer in the old days.

I am glad to have caught him in at least 2 concerts this season. I regret having missed this lec-dem since I had office work at the same time.

Rasikas who miss this vidvan are making a great mistake.

If ever my daughter takes to mrdangam, this is whom I would like her to worship as an ideal. There's a child-like innocence, sincerity and exhuberance in his playing that is unmatched by anyone else. To all this add his undisputed laya genius, precision in execution, nAdam, thoppi and what have you...and it makes for an awesome mix.

I think the program was jointly organized by Krishna Gana Sabha and Carnatica. One of them possibly recorded it.

The same thing goes here my friend. According to me, no other Vidwan (with due respect to all other greats) has the nAdham, Gumukki, Thoppi and most importantly THE WEIGHT. Weight is the one and only one aspect that makes Shankaran sir always 10 steps ahead of other Vidwans. And sadly, I feel very less people (rasikas) are appreciating it.

The mix of talent, training and style (Pudukkottai/Palan School) makes him unique. Take a simple sollu, example in Khanda Nadai, if he plays TAKITATOM. This simple Sollu, a layman's Sollu, when comes out of his hands, its different, its unique and appreciating people involuntarily say "Aaaah, super" All other masters are greats, and have amply demonstrated their skills, no doubt. But Nobody can beat Sankaran Sir... I feel so.
