This is a piece where the ill-used nAyika is complaining to her sakhi about her errant lord who has not come back to her after promising her that he'd marry her, and making her the butt of the jests of the cruel world that laughs at her pitiable plight.

Dear friend (tOzhi), this situation I find myself in has become (pOnadaDi) a jest (gEliyAi) for those that bear witness (pArpavarkkum) to it, and to even those just hear (kETparvarkkum) of it. It has turned into (AnadaDi) a pitiable (kEvalamAi) farce!

Wielding (piDittu) a spear (vEl) in his hand (kai), he appeared/came/burst upon (vandAn) the scene like a brave warrior (vIranai), but, behaving like something that sours (tiriya vaittu) good quality (nallla) milk (pAlinai) [1], he ended up (pOi) crouching (padungiyE) behind something and hiding himself (oLindAn).

In the caraNam, the nAyika explains why she considers her nAyaka as a boorish sourpuss. She say, 'he (tAn) approached (vandAnaDi) [2] me before (munnE) I (nAn) set out (pOgum) in search (tEDi) of him and when I (nAn) hastily ran out (ODi) and stood (nirkaiyilE) before him, he made (tandAnaDi) me an auspicious (nal) promise (vAkku) [3]! Stealing (tiruDiyE) my heart (uLLam) that had blossomed (pUtta) with (kUDi) the nectar (tEn) of love, he went away (SenrAnaDi)! He has made the pitiable object of jest - he's made (vaittu) everyone on this (inda) entire (ellAm) street (teruvu) that I live on to laugh (sirikka) at me, when he went away (SenrAnaDi) without returning (tirumbAde) [4].

[1] A figure of speech used to denote an action that results in something unwanted, or inauspicious - since the souring of milk is considered a bad omen - unless the milk is 'soured' on purpose to make curds and whey
[2] aDi is a term of familiarity used to address a female companion of equal or lower social status
[3] nal vAkku - an auspicious promise of marriage
[4] Could also mean 'without turning around, or looking back'

In the javalis `Indendu Vachitivira' in Surutti, and `Geliyay Ponadadi' in Behag, the varied emotions of anger and anguish, love and jealousy were captured with quick changes in expressions and mudras.

I'm reviving this thread after ages to post this marvelously subtle and mature interprettation of this composition by Prof. Sudharani Raghupathy. I love the start from the anupallavi - the composition seems to flow anticlimactically from that point on.....
And it gives the composer as one Vanampadi. Lakshmanji - are you aware of this composer?
And it makes perfect sense that the delectable music was the handiwork of vidvAn Madurai Sri Krishnan!

Yes I was ware of his name but had recorded it as Vanambadi. Which is correct, Vanambadi or Vanampadi?

in kannada and telugu too.
SrI Tyagaraja says *gEliyu cEsEvADu* in the pancaratna kriti of Arabhi.
