The emphasis of the concert was on the compositions, rather than a display of virtuosity. The raga delineations were scholarly and traditional, and were tailored to the compositions, as were the neraval and swarams, rather than explore uncharted territory which would then be a mismatch with the kriti.
However, while the vocalist emphasised the dha-ni-sa of the raga Gamanasrama, I felt that in the violin solo, the gamanasrama was too close to Purvikalyani and tended to slip into it, with the dha-sa-ri-ga phrase occurring now and then.
The violin accompaniment was good, as was the percussion ensemble. The mridangam had a rich sonorous tone, and the khanjira provided a crisp contrast, with the staccato ghatam adding texture. This khanjira had the jingles inside, but some don't, why? Its so much nicer with the jingles.
A good well balanced concert, which presented some new compositions as well.
The item that appealed to me was the swarajati in Khamas with unusual daatu phrases. (Always on the lookout for new items to learn! Maybe I am not a true rasika, more of the typical student trying to learn new things!)
