I am posting this eulogy upon the passing of my guru, vidwan Puranam Purushottama Shastri. From a very early age, he influenced my musical development - and I would say that of my brother as well. Shastri gaaru also taught my father Carnatic music, expanding the latter's repertoire beyond his former training in Hindustani music.
He sang and taught with conviction, power, deep scholarship, and passion. His sense of humor (esp. pertaining to musical matters) was legendary, and I can recall many a hearty moment with him and my parents during his visits to our house in Hyderabad. He was an excellent teacher. Although retaining strict classical values, he was open to new experiences and ideas. He was much acclaimed and awarded at the state and national levels, but he was at heart a man of genuine warmth, simplicity, and no pretense. He did not mince his words. His care and affection for disciples - present and former - was extraordinary. On one occasion, my brother was visiting Hyderabad after a long time. Shastri gaaru insisted that he not leave until he had learned a new kriti from him for old times' sake. We still have the recording of Shastri gaaru teaching my brother "Deva deva jagadisvara" in Purvikalyani.
If he has now merged with Brahman, then I feel happy, but if he is coming back then I hope it will be to continue enriching our practice of classical music.
