Cashing in on the “Cleaveland-pogaamal-iruppeno-naan” syndrome among CM artists, Jaya TV’s Carnatic music idol event has dangled a slot at the Cleaveland aradhana as the prize. I was just thinking of how the show would have unfolded had the stakes been:
(A) Rs. 50000 would be paid directly to a guru of the winner’s choice (out of a list of 6 gurus determined by the channel) that would give the winner a guaranteed 200 hours of learning from the guru over a period of one year.
(B) A two-night-three-day all expenses paid to trip to Thanjavur along with 3 other family members. The package covers:
Travel by an A/C Innova vehicle
Accommodation and food at a 4-star hotel in Thanjavur
Opportunity to sing Pancharatna kirthanas sitting alongside seniors during the Annual Thiruvaiyaru Aradhana
Visits to memorials of Dhikshithar, Syama Sastri and Sadasiva Brahmendra
1) Would the same set of contestants participated
2) Would a different set of contestants participated
3) Would the same set of judges participated
4) Would the response have been so poor that the channel would have had to scrap the event

Re: Stakes at CM competitions
this would be decided normally by TRP ratings and the no of sponsors depend on this. talk shows involving children are a rave here and America craze is rampant here. I do not think the above alternative would pull this much participation but the viewership would not have been different. In any case the promoters' efforts are laudable because in comparison with dance and cine song recital shows this show tries to promote a traditional art form

Regarding point A, the guru may benefit but I am not sure the winning student would like to commit or even be able to commit to such an engagement.makham wrote:Cashing in on the “Cleaveland-pogaamal-iruppeno-naan” syndrome among CM artists, Jaya TV’s Carnatic music idol event has dangled a slot at the Cleaveland aradhana as the prize. As for point B, the contestant and family can always visit Thanjavur/TiruvaiyaRu on their own. It is also a domestic trip--not much charm perhaps.
Cleveland trip is something of a fantasy even for second-string musicians. So that would be a dream-trip for the youngsters.

You should compare only a cash prize (to winner) vs (trip to USA). The latter will be more attractive.
