Re: RAGA ANUBHAVAM
Here is a report and comments by rasikas on one of the recently conducted RAGA ANUBHAVAM progs. of Mudhra as published in our magazine Samudhra -
An interesting session on Identifying Ragas The eighth session of Mudhra’s music appreciation programme held on 25th October in association with Brahma Gana Sabha took up the subject “Identifying ragas.” This was jointly presented by O.S.Thiagarajan and Dr.Radha Bhaskar. After a brief description of Ragas by Radha through a power point presentation, an assorted variety of ragas of various categories were taken for identification. In each, Thiagarajan sang the scale, key phrases and popular compositions for a detailed understanding of their structure. The vast experience and vidhwat of Thiagarajan were visible even as he sang the first few phrases of each raga. He also highlighted the musical excellence in some of Saint Thyagarja’s kritis and showed how they overflowed with raga bhava. While singing the alapanas, he remembered the distinct contribution of the past stalwarts and this added a special flavour to the presentation. The overflowing audience was delighted to be a part of this lively educative session and expressed that Mudhra should do this on a regular basis so that rasikas can benefit from it.
What some rasikas who attended the session say –
An excellent session. An extremely well spent Sunday evening Very enlightening.
- N.Venkateswarn, Chennai -33
Today’s programme was the best of its kind for the audience, enjoyable to listen and many things to learn practically and theoretically for a lay person. Popular kritis and musicians were given lot of importance.
- Saroja Swamy, Chennai – 28
A good attempt to teach Carnatic music to rasikas.

The beauty of Carnatic ragas was well brought out by OST.
- Lalitha, Chennai – 4
An innovative attempt to tutor rasikas.
- Rohini Ramamurthy, Chennai – 28
Considering the vastness and complexity, you have done a wonderful job of educating the rasikas on the finer aspects of Carnatic music.
- S.Ramayya, Chennai - 90
Really useful session. This session has impressed me to be a part of every future session.
- R.M.Balasubramaniam, Chennai – 33
The session was highly educative ands enjoyable. Especially when Dr.Radha Bhaskar explained about Gamakas, I understood what it is all about. Similarly, the rendition and explanation given by O.S.Thiagarajan for various ragas and his anecdotes were excellent.
- R.Ravichandran, Chennai – 4
An eventful, thought provoking and memorable function. A good interaction between Radha Bhaskar and O.S.Thiagarjan. Presentation was vivid and lucid with easy explanations. It was well appreciated by all the audience with a standing ovation. Awaiting many more such useful Raga evenings. - T.M.Panchapakesan,Chennai - 17

Thank you Dr. Bhaskar!
(For a brief moment, I saw the PIN code as the age of the person, and wondered what 4-year old could be so expressive, before realizing that it was a mylApore-vAsi, and not a 4-year old!)

Excellent attempts. what were the raagas covered? will there be a session for the taalas.? All the attempts made by my wife to part with the some knowledge ofthe simplest taalas has ended in a fiasco, She was disgusted I am reminded of a dialogue from the film 'THEMAN WHO CAME TO DINNER', Even Florence Nightingale would dread to serve you gobilalitha
