rajgalan,
Missed another chance of meeting you. I did not write a review because I only ride piggy back on other reviews--I am not competent enough to write one. I will try to give the song list and write down my impressions. Corrections are more than welcome. Wish Vijay, Bilahari, kedharam or Sappri had attended this concert and had given a more meaningful review.

At the end of this concert, I had mixed feelings. A bit of rethinking on my part too because I am among those who think that a major performer's concert is not complete without an RTP. I am also one who dreams of a four hour concert! As a rule, a three hour+ concert is satisfying to me. Someone I know asked: is a two hour concert worth your while? I like a two hour concert too when it comes to the up and coming musicians. What he meant was that I perhaps wouldn't care to listen to a star artiste for just two hours without his singing an RTP. Since my stay in India is almost coming to an end, I did not want to miss a live concert before I left--that too by Sanjay whose music I admire a lot.

karuNimpa and the majestic kEdAram song set the pace to the concert. asAveri followed and though brief, Sanjay sculpted the rAgam expertly and with a bit of newness. AbhOgi AlApanA was rich in its texture and sounded different from the AbhOgi he sangat the Music Academy during the season (sabApathikku), It was an enchanting tapestry he wove.
Hari kAmbOdi which followed was exceptional. I consider it a tricky rAgam and while I sing it, I'm aware of kamAs lurking in the wings all the time! DinamaNi vamsa is a fine song, but it has been chewed to bits by the young and old. It leaves me with a sense of 'isn't there more to it?' much of the time. Sanjay treated the rAgam seriously and scrutinized several of its dimensions and communicated them to the audience, getting into MMI's mode here and there which was very pleasing. He brought liveliness to the rAgA and aptly followed it with kamala pada malariNai of PS which has a gait which I liked. He was very emotive, sang an excellent neraval at tirumAl maruganE, SaravaNa bavanE and also svarams, throwing in a bit of kaNakku to please those who love that stuff.
A lively tani followed which I liked (without knowing much of the details and intricacies, of course). During the rest of the concert, Murugabhupathi was pleasing and supportive. Sanjeev was sweet in places and his playing was adequate otherwise. The khanjira sound which I have a soft spot for, didn't make a big impression on me.
Sanjay's voice was malleable and he could have sung a four hour concert that day, but he had to wind up with the togaiyRA. Interesting, Shashi Kiran at the end of the concert expressed his regret and said that it was a two hour concert but was like a four hour one (in substance?). I agree with him on that. Coming to think of it, an AIR dIpAvali concert of an hour's duration by Sanjay a couple of years ago sounded just as satisfying...

well done arasi!
You have graduated to the level of our fine team of Reviewers at the Forum. Your personalized appreciation of music has grown by leaps and bounds. A few more years of visiting India during the season will mature you to be one among the finest reviewers. Maybe you need some lessons in appreciating laya which you can easily pick up. The subtle comments and comparisons with the stalwarts of yore who you have heard is quite enjoyable. May your talents grow and multiply as you shake off that self-effacing defensive diffidence!

arasi, thanks for your review.
‘kedharam’ and ‘meaningful review’ – queeni, isn’t it a polite oxymoron? :):):)
One more lovely account of harikambhoji where the composer has filtered the essence and every melodic nuance of harikambhoji is TanjavUr shankar Iyer’s composition, ‘mUrUgA thirUmAl marUgA’.

May be next time, we can make it.
Your review (impressions) is very good. For me, impression is better than a technical review the reason being
I cannot understand the technicals.Thanks.
As a coincidence , in a 2003 season album he sang Abogi (submain -manasunilpa) and
HK kamalapadamalar as main. But definitely he is in a different level compared to what he was in 2003.

Mon ami,
Thanks--and with your blessings!

Kedharam,
Meaningful also means significant which your reviews can claim to be. Also, ked(h)Aram has a majesty about it. If I'm queenie just because my name happens to be regal, like the rAgam, you can also claim majesty ;)
