Bhavajan, you should contact Parimal Phadke, an established dancer from Pune who has worked in this area, and has published a few articles on this subject. You can contact him through the forum - his ID is parimalphadke.

http://www.narthaki.com/info/tdhc/tdhc12.html - Muthukumaran Pillai was an acclaimed dancer himself. Sivanandam of Tanjore Quartet was said to be a dancer himself as well.

I have been a male bharathanatyam dancer all my life.
The North American work culture still does not accept being a male dancer as something masculine. There is stigma attached to it.
If you are a male dancer here, you will find it very difficult to have a career working in a large firm and still be accepted as a normal male.
You will be forced to hide your dancing career as something very private.
You may be teased a lot in high school as it is not part of the macho image.
In spite of these difficulties, I am pleased to see more and more male dancers emerge in North America.
It may take quite a while for the North American culture to change and be more accepting of a male dancer as they accept a male painter, male singer or a male drummer.
More public performances may help.
I also feel the male dancer has to be very careful to portray a masculine image on stage and also as he carries about life in general. Any hint of femininity will be misconstrued.
For example, wearing make up, lipstick, painting the eyes are all difficult subjects.
I feel the display of the male torso is aesthetically pleasing and adds to the performance. When a male and female dance together, the male dancer certainly adds to the strength of the event.
I see that some leading female dance exponents disagree with the concept of a shirtless male.
I will be interested in others' comments.
