Any rasikas listen to this one? Impressions?
There is another teaching CD/DVD? in which NNK taught four ragas, and explained their lakshaNam, with the malladi brothers 'learning'.

Sri NedanUri excels in Alapanas, and his expositions of the rAga-swarupas were exemplary. He pointed out the anuswara patterns which distinguish seemingly allied rAgas, and also gave a very intelligent lesson in crafting Alapana-s out of the phrase motifs in kRti-s.

Re: Nedanuri Alapana CD
I don't know if I am alone in thinking this but NNK is unique in his methodical way of unfolding a raga. Not for him the random flourish or the runaway briga from bottom to top of the scale and down until the ragam has been nice and settled. I have heard him take even a heavily phrase oriented raga like sahAnA or aTANA and apply his measured technique in alapana. I have never seen any other artist use a somewhat discernible structure to all their alapanas. ARI seemed a bit that way too but his alapanas on recordings are too short compared to NNK's to do a side-by-side comparison. KVN, while having given innumerable long and measured alapanas, did not seem to use a given structure for a raga except in a loose sense. Other artists who seemed to use a lot of rigor in alapana construction were Ramnad Krishnan and Voleti. But both seemed to concentrate more on the dual problem of a long alapana, namely, avoid repetition which takes a lot of discipline but on the question of how to construct an alapana they seemed to go by intuition.keerthi wrote:http://www.hindu.com/fr/2010/05/21/stor ... 290600.htm

Has anyone else noticed this as well or am I just dreaming this pattern up?

thenpaanan,
I have wondered about it too--not in the same scrutinizing way as you are capable of. Seems as if he nurses each phrase with the purpose of building a rAgam up (not merely skeletally but fleshing them out as he goes along), bringing sukhAnubhavam to the listener. You say it well, and I agree.
Prashant could add his valuable comments. I rarely see him posting these days though

Have a Ramanavami Concert recording of NNK in which detailed exposition of kalyani followed by "yE thAvu nAra" had been sung in the company of LGJ & VR- a solid 45 mts. Kalyani's alapana is really very unique.
