The heading says "Most travelled" but the post says "Widely travelled". Which is it i.e are we looking for the musician who spends most time outside India, or the one who visits the most number of different places?

What about TNS? I have heard my relatives saying that TNS is more knowledgable about Greyhound service ,its routes , connections, tariff etc than an average American :

I thought it was Sanjay Subrahmanyan the most and widely traveled musician. He makes 30 odd concerts in a month in US and probably knows Southwest Airlines route better than anyone else. He is also an avid boad game geek, so probably knows board games stores in US well. He travels to Europe, Australia very well. Probably only continent that has not heard our carnatic music is Antartica. We have several cruise like mac mania, geek cruises. How about a carnatic cruise to Antartica?

Most of the top musicians would have performed in North America, UK and Western Europe, Australia/NZ. Middle East, South East Asia (Singapore/Malaysia/Hong Kong) and South Africa. Most of these places have sizable NRI populations. The most widely traveled musicians would have performed in all these countries plus other destinations such as Eastern Europe, Japan/China/Indonesia, East/West/North Africa & South America.

Yes, sir! I meant 2 months. Usually he gives concerts on friday, sat, sun and sometimes mid week in a university town.mohan wrote: You probably mean 30 concerts during a tour which lasts 2-3 months!

I wonder if there have been any Carnatic music concerts in Pakistan in the last 20 years?

VKR,
Mohan asks about Pakistan from a political angle, I guess. They do have a few HM concerts of indian artistes--may be not any CM concerts. It is understandable. How many HM concerts do we have in Chennai which is an enlightened city and yes, is a tambram stronghold? As for tambrams, there are many who are not a least bit nterested in CM. There are several other tams who are.

Re: Most travelled carnatic musician of this era
I feel that after partition there has been no Carnatic Music concerts in Pakistan. Prior to partition, Lahore and Karachi had a significant South Indian population. A colleague of mine who was born in Karachi, said that there was a Karachi Tamizh Sangam in pre partition days ! Congress MP, Mani Shankar Ayyar too was Lahore born. I presume there must have been CM concerts before partition in these two cities atleast.mohan wrote:I wonder if there have been any Carnatic music concerts in Pakistan in the last 20 years?
One condition which needs to be fulfilled for a concert in Pakistan is that no music should be in praise of "any other God".
HM being raga based is able to fulfil this condition, whereas CM being predominantly Bhakthi based cannot come under these guidelines. Instrumental concerts may however be possible. In any case Lahore and Karachi are the only 2 places where a concert can be held (if at all).
Most parts of Pakistan like Peshawar, North and South Waziristan etc are almost autonomous regions under defacto Taliban rule and music of any type is banned.
Interestingly Bangladesh (which until 1971 was part of Pakistan) now allows CM and BMK has performed many times in Dhaka. This is available in youtube.

MSG has given performances in Afghanistan (along with his illustrious father), I wonder if he has also toured Pakistan.

Bangladesh - CM concerts interesting. Having lived in West Bengal for 20+ years, I never even imagined that.

CM seems to also have had a Burma connection...I think some of our CM artistes were born there, e.g. Palghat Raghu, our own vageyakara Ramaraj, et al.
Is there any CM activity in Burma today?

How about most frequently/widely travelled within India: which Carnatic musicians are most familiar to rasikas in non-metros outside the states of Tamil Nadu/AP/Karnataka/Kerala?

Though all musicians generally travel a lot also within India these days, BMK is the only musician who comes to my mind, when it comes to being popular outside southern states. TNS is also famous to an extent due to his jugalbandhis with Ajoy Chakrabarthi. From violinists, i would say MSG, in terms of popularity outside south, is ahead of say a TNK/Lalgudi, again because of his foray/mastery over HM. Regarding percussionists, most of them are famous outside south i would say.vainika wrote: which Carnatic musicians are most familiar to rasikas in non-metros outside the states of Tamil Nadu/AP/Karnataka/Kerala?

I think smt. MSS would be the most recognized carnatic musician outside south India...though a majority in the north might know her mostly for her bhajans. Wasn't she also the most travelled in those days, from Russia to the UN to many other far off lands and within India too?

You are right. MS did not visit Australia.mohan wrote: MSS hasn't come to Australia and I don't think travelled to Africa either.
However she did visit Egypt in 1963 (geographically in North Africa but emotionally more closer to the Arab world) where she gave a concert attended among others by the legendary Arab singer Om Kulsum.

Re: Most travelled carnatic musician of this era
CML, I guess it should have been in Egypt in 1963.
MS did tour a few countries in Europe in 1963 (along with Edinborough Music Festival) or 1966 (along with her 1st coast-to-coast tour of USA) or both. I'm not sure which one. There is a color photograph of MS and Sadasivam mama greeting the then Pope, Paul VI prior to her concert. She sang in Toronto, Canada, I think in both the tours of '66 and '77. I can't locate it now. MS has also sung in Philippines, Japan, Bhutan and other asian countries. I think she along with Pt. Ravi Shankar are the one of the most travelled artistes yesteryears. Some of her pictures during her tours are available to http://www.msstribute.org/gallery/gallery12.php.
Thanks to Smt Radha Vishwanathan and her disciple (and artiste), Navaneet Krishnan of Chennai.
I think in the current lot, the Kiran Brothers, Ravi and Shashi (along with Ganesh) and Sudha Raghunathan are traveling a lot and entralling a variety of audiences all over the world.

With another thread mentioning about Chitraveena Ravikiran's visit to Slovenia to teach CM to Slovenian students , he may be a keen contender for the "most travelled" position.

Interesting topic. There are so many interesting things to know about a carnatic musician, which rasikas keep wondering about. Wish there was a program titled coffee with carnatic musician, where they are asked about their likes, their favourite carnatic songs, the countries they have visited, their joyful moments, and other experiences.

I'm wondering. When front liners, youngsters and veterans are giving concerts all year round in every corner of the world, it seems as though the least traveled musicians are in the minority now!
Happy that CM is heard in many parts of the world--thanks to the much traveled vidvAns and vidUshis of today...

Vid.Patri Satish kumar may be. In one of the youtube videos, Vid. Prince Rama Varma says that : "Patri's Mridangam when kept vertically will be this tall. Something taller than that is his passports lined up one over the other"

I think so too. Once Patri accompanied Lalgudi Krishnan and Viji in Singapore. After the concert he told me he had just arrived from US that morning into Singapore and was off again for some big travel soon.
Well....there's only so much travel a system can really bear.
In Lalgudi biography also it is mentioned that during 60s and 70s he used to travel incessantly.
