Subha Ganesan gave a remarkable presentation of evocative music on June 5th. she showed her close affinity to classical music and has the knack of presenting the concert in an interesting way.

She opened her recital with a rendition of Thodi varnam, followed it with Namanavini and Srichakra raja nilaye. The swaras for chakravaham were very fluent and extempore. subha's essay of Mohanakalyani was a fine picture of the essence of the raga, the alapana was followed by Bhuvaneswariya'.
The fine relaxed rendition of Ambanilambari attracted attention..
The exposition of thodi alapana was brilliant, it was sung with lot of ease and poise . It was exhaustive and sung with depth and bhava. The song Dasarathy was finely decorated with eloborate niraval and swaras. Her treatment of both alapanas deserve special mention.
An exquisite Kavadi chindu and thiruppugazh in charukesi came at the end giving full satisfaction to the knowledgeable audience that had assembled on the occassion.

Violinist M A Krishnasamy supported well, V m Ganesan in Mrithangam and K V Gopalakrishnan Kanjira played and interesting thani avarthanam. The concert was vibrant throughout.

Both the varnam and the main were in Todi ragam. A rarity. Was this deliberate or just an oversight by the artist.

Isn't that the format followed in the olden days, that the varnam and the main should be in the same rAgam? In fact i have heard lot of iyengArvAL's concerts (recordings) with the varnam and the main in the same rAgam.

Yes, this used to happen in ARI's concerts's.
As long as the main piece of the day is in the same raga of the Varnam, it is fine.

I realize this is possibly a hard question to answer. Did Ms Ganesan sing this kriti in the way that DKP sang it or the way Geetha Raja/Aruna Sairam sing it (or some third way)? The two versions of this kriti that I mention are sufficiently similar and also sufficiently different to be intriguing on the question of how these two versions have come to exist. Not only are the sangatis different but the chittaiswarams are also somewhat different in the two cases.

I believe the composer is Ponnaiyya Pillai of the Tanjore Quartet.

TIA

Sri Annamalai reddiar has composed kavadichindus with his mudra, I dont think Palani shanmuka velundu is his composition .

And in a light hearted vein, the uneasiness starts when the main itself becomes a varnam  8)

nAmanavini is by Garbhaopurivasa. I too don't think that the kAvaDicindu is by Annamalai Reddiar.

The composer of 'Amba Nilambari is Ponnaiyya Pillai of the Tanjore Quartet.
Last year in the Music Academy Lec-dem Smt.Sitha Rajan, sang two versions of this kriti , as thenpannan has said the sangathis and the chittaiswarams are also different ..
