Gokul (our forumite -- thyagarajadasa) gave a nice concert on sunday at the Guruvayurappan temple. I reached when the begada alapana was unfolding. He is a disciple of his maternal grandmother Smt. Bhagavati Mani (who learnt from the Swati Tirunal college), and also of Sri Neyvel Santhanagopalan (his paternal uncle). Currently he is learning from Smt. Kalyani Sharma of Mumbai. Gokul is a BTech from NIT Nagpur and is currently purusing a MTech in IIT Bombay. I know him well, I am not posting a review perse, but just highlighting points from the concert

Very nice rendition of Begada raga - very creative in many parts, but with some flat notes ala shankarAbharaNam at places. The kriti rendition (a rare one) was brisk with swaras at the pallavi line. Lots of rounds of slow swaras, with the bulk of the second speed swaras in khanda nadai.
The highlight was the pallavi, with a nice alapana with shruti bEdham into mOhanam, a beautiful madhyamakala tAnam. The whole R and T suite took 30 mins, the pallavi in simple Adi 2 kalai was rendered well with the trikalam. The swaras, were also quite mathematical in nature with khanda nadai featuring prominently.

The violinist played well, and answered the vocalists laya challenges credibly. The mridangist was very good, especially for songs which he knew, the acompanient for lOkAvanachaturA was supreme. All in all a nice concert without any sag and kept the listeners engaged.
