I see that pattabhi's concert report is already up. I enjoyed it too.
Next day evening was G ravi kiran.
It was a highly charged performance....lot of passion and energy with free flowing musical ideas.
The pakka melam was nalina mohan violin, bc manjunathan mridangam and guruprasanna khanjira.
By the time I entered, varnam was almost over and ravi kiran took up chemmangudi iyervaal's hit item Marubalka - lovely rendition with high voltage swarams.
Next was another iyerval's hit number 'vinaraada na' rendered in madhyama kalam.
The first alapanai of the day was begada - traversing three octaves followed by subbaraya shastry's keerthanam sankari neeve. Good rendition with second speed swaras.
The next piece was a soothing sompaina in ahiri which was popularised by MS subbulakshmi.
Following that was a racy marivere dikkevarayya in shanmugapriya with fast neraval and swarams - the best part was the swarams which were all only single avarthana - with one round starting from lower pa to thara pa - rocket!!!
The piece de resistance was Kedaragowla - started off sedately and traversed all octaves with grandeur.
Saraguna Palimpa was noteworthy for its neraval which spanned three speeds.
More accent was on slower speed swarams - even kuraippu was done in keezh kaalam at the top rishabham.
Swara prastharam was done at three points - vara guna, shatha dhruti and also at manmatha janaka.
Tani avartanam was a bit loud but both artists manjunathan and guruprasanna played very well overall.
Couldn't stay for the tukkudas - I guess the full song list is available on g ravikiran's blog - google can throw up the link.
nalina mohan on violin was good overall except in kedaragowlai alapanai which had one too many yadukula kamboji phrases.
I hope ravikiran keeps up his current commitment to sampradayam and pure music.
