Will confirm the accompaniments before EOD today - I know for sure Vid Charulatha Ramanujam will be accompanying her on the violin.

Arasi - the concert was AWESOME! the highlights - a most most most brilliant Bilahari (dorakuna) - it made us wonder how could anyone sing this way - whether it was the alaapanai, neraval or the outstanding swaraprasthara - what can one say! todi - arakimpave in all its glory - grrrrrreat neraval and swaram; Neela Mami's patented Khamas (Swaminatha) - stole everyone's hearts; the not-so-oft sung Jayantasena ragam - wow! too good to be true - (vinata sutapa) - and wonderful kalpanaswaras.
There were tears in everyone's eye for mami's Ugabhoga (Bhagyashri) followed by a devarnama.
Due to shortage of time - the audience missed the RTP
I will wait for someone to give a formal list.

Great to know that Jayanthasena was elaborated. Only DKP/DKJ have popularised this famous song "vinathAsutha vAhana sri" DKJ has sung swarams in a commercial..Being a Kharaharapriya Janyam may not be too difficult to elaborate.

Actually MMI was the first one to popularise this raga as well as composition & treated it very elaborately as a major piece in his concerts. Absolutely brilliant as he utilised the major accompanying talents of Rajamanikam Pillai,Chowdiah, LGJ among others. Actually after a particularly brilliant rendering by DKJ I told him at the end of the concert his reminded me of MMI'S RENDERING. BEING A VERY FRANK PERSON he said right way that he was flattered as he had been trying to reach the MMI level for this particular piece but unable to do so! Such MODESTY& HONESTY which we can use a lot more now a days.........VKV

VKV/CACM- Thanx for this info. In fact i also have MMI's rendition. MMI's "vina nA sakhuni" in Pratahapa Varali, I keep listening very often. This song also i don't think any other artistse has rendered. Each song once u hear from MMI, we don't feel like listening from any other artiste. That was the level of MMI's perfection.

This song also i don't think any other artistse has rendered. Each song once u hear from MMI, we don't feel like listening from any other artiste. That was the level of MMI's perfection.

Dear Manjunath, YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY RIGHT ABOUT MMI'S RENDERINGS! His Pratapavarali was DIVINE like most of his renderings.
YOU are making me totally nostalgic & pining for my days in Madras. Thinking of my experiences with MMI, GNB& MALI I still wonder how I ended up HERE 51 years ago & still continue to live here!........Let me close with hopefully an interesting anectode: My close friend late SSV(Author of the book "Bathroom Singer"-also called LIC Venkataraman- MMI used to ask before starting his concert has LIC SSV ARRIVED YET! & I used to visit MMI often in his house. As we thought at that time (& I still do) that the trinity had written their compositions so an MMI could sing them we went to his home on his birthday with a framed picture of the trinity with photo of MMI in the bottom to present it. He immediately asked us to disassemble his photo from that collage saying what we did was highly improper! He said no one else can be grouped with the trinity who were the fountain & foundation of our music.......I learnt more than music from MMI!.....VKV

VKV-Thanx for sharing these wonderful memories with MMI. I have been his fan for the past 55 years. There can be only one MMI( na bhUtho na bhavishyathi)!!! See,his simplicity & an egoloess MMI. He asked u to remove his snap which u had added alongwith TRINITY. Entha Veduko in Saraswathi Manohari & Sukhi Evvaro in Kanada are other favourites of MMI, i keep enjoying every now & then.

Dear Manjunath, I have wondered why it is that any song MMI rendered he OWNED. I have spent considerable amount of time WHY IT IS SOand the only logical explanation I can come up with is-Apart from his GENIUS- is that he has said that he would listen to EVERY ARTIST & actually go to them & learn from them new songs to come up with his own version; He also will immediately - call up the artist & congragulate-discuss after listening to them on AIR! He used to strum-sing along & it was MOST EXCITING! I still remember Flute Ramani wide eyed saying MMI called him after a concert of his on AIR & congragulating him on an innovative move on his part. No wonder Papanasam Sivan who visited him after a Kapali Temple concert & in which Sivan had requested Kanakkankodi(kambodhi) told him that tho' Sivan was the composer it was MMI'S RENDERING that made that composition reach its full potential!...VKV

Apart from presenting each song so perfectly which will have MMI's rubber stamp, the sarva laghu swara patterns for each and every song will have his stamp.The swara pattern just flows. Accompanists must have been extremely alert to play for MMI. Take Kamalamba bhajare(Kalayani);Koluvai( Bhairavi);Marivere di KevaraYa rama(Shanmukhapriya).........my above observations can be very easily derived by listening to these songs. This is just a pick from his many available records. Meenakshi Me Mudham( Gamakakriya);Seethapathe(Kamach) etc; etc may be other songs one enjoys. Saraswathi Manohari swara patterns takes the listener another world.

Sri.K.S.Kalidas- the last disciple of Palani- earlier this year- gave an excellent illustrated talk with examples from MMI CONCERTS WITH PALANI on how difficult it is to accompany MMI'S Sarvalaghu approach on the annual MMI REMEMBRANCE Day at Raga sudha Hall & how his ragam, thanam as well as the rendering of compositions were permeated with the perfect kalapramanam in the Sarvalaghu patterns.
