I was fortunate to attend a rare duet concert of Sri K.N Shashikiran and Smt. Kiranavali Vidyasankar. This was preceded by a voice culture and raga appreciation workshop conducted by them.It was zesty and an interactive event. The brother-sister combination gelled well and were a nice team altogether. It was amazing to see a lot of kids answering tough questions posed by Sri. K.N.Shashikiran.The concert was well attended by eager students as well as rasikas.
The accompanying artists performed well. They were accompanied by Balaskandan on mridangam,Sriram on Kanjira and Deepa Murthy on the violin.

I know that the siblings used to perform together when they were young and stopped after Shri Shashikiran's voice broke. Do you have any idea what sort of sruthi they sang on? How did it sound? What pieces had manodharmam?

Also any information on the lec-dem?

Basically, the lec- dem involved an insight into voice management, a demo of voice exercises and valuable tips on practice all with a touch of good humor. They also demonstrated a few Melakarta ragas and enlightened us on various ragas. Not to mention it was an interactive session with a lot of Q’s & A’s. The knowledge gained in that short time is immeasurable and it definitely gave a feeling that Carnatic music is fun to learn.
Coming to the concert, they sang swarams for Nattai,Janaranjani and Purvikalyani. The latter being the main, they sang alapana, nereval and swarams. As to pitch, it’s a wonder as to how they managed to match it and sing together,it being a male and female duet.
