When taking a right turn before pallavaram bus stand, it takes you to pozhicha’lure’, since the thrimoorthi sangeetha sabha attracts the audience towards sath sangam. Giving room for concerts with a chamber music atmosphere, under the traditional palm top roofing, one can easily involve himself with the pAdal’kaL’, AlA’panai-kaL’, suswara layangaL and all.
Shankar commenced the concert with valaji varNam with a sedate mood. Then came the ‘thEn’ukA which enhanced the mood further as one easily identifies one’s state of mind, responsibilities and goal while hearing theliyalEru rAmA. Not only the impact of that word “enakku theriyalayE†makes you feel so, but the perfect tuning of the song in dhEnuka enables that expression flow as a row in moonlight, which comforts the listener’s heart. Though the krithi speaks about bakthi mArga, it is all about mArga of anything which rings inside the rasika. Even the bhAva laden swaras, though they carry no meaning, conveys the unsaid and also the state of mind where you feel like you need something but you have no words to say that…
evarani was followed by a vibrant poorvi kalyANi and Shankar brought out the colours and majesty of the rAga well. Syama sasthri’s vilOma chApu krithi and the niraval in paramalO contained good energy and I wish to make a mention here, Shankar has an appreciable taste in niraval.
Two weeks ago, I was explaining to my friend B.T.Rangarajan about accompanying for songs like nee dhayarAdhA and marugElara, where the adding and silencing of the thom creates approximation to music when the singer does a sanchAram in dhA and land on pA. He came to the concert and to our surprise there was that jayanthashrI and I felt so happy for that.
After Anandha bhairavi and chandhrajyOthi (I think that made me mention about the moonlight!) he took shankarAbharaNam which was pregnant with awesome deliveries! His voice reached the thAra panchama without strain and it contained an equal ease in the lower octave too. The niraval in vEdha sAsthra and swaras with sA-ma vEdha were nice ending with a good 128 aksharAs kOrvai (two AvarthAs in reNdu kaLai). I took the cue from the kOrvai line itself and started my thani and landed in the niraval line and played kaNda gathi and UKS sir’s 9-8-7(format) mOrA.
Melakaveri Thayagarajan sported a neat and good art.
The concert concluded with thEdi unnai and traditional mangaLam. A memorable concert of Shankar Narayanan, marked with clear voice and beautiful improvisations.
