Re: An event to remember Thiruvengadu Sri Jayaraman
I left the concert with a headache because of the sound (or should I see "unsound"!) man. How can anybody be so stupid as to spoil such a performance with such volume? This is the worst instance of this that I have seen for several years. Even though that hall is not ideal, acoustically, I have never seen them do so badly there.
Luckily I had seen Sri. Sudarshan sing the previous day, at a hastily organised house concert courtesy of Jaysri and jeyaraj --- which is why I had wanted to see him again. Sudarshan is a stunning performer. I really really hope that others will invite him to perform in Chennai and that we will see him more often.
At J&J's house he was accompanied magnificently by VV Ravi on violin, and amazingly skilfully by our Ram on Mridangam. Whilst VV Ravi is a veteran, Ram is a youngster, but it doesn't show; he plays with the skill and creativity of someone with much, much more experience.
At Sastri Hall, the line up was Dr Hemalatha, Patri Satish Kumar and Dr Karthik. They were all (subject to the sound man) superb. Actually, everyone was far too loud except for the violin: maybe the Sastri hall man doesn't like violin! The tani was sparkling and complex and the koraipu went down to half-akshara divisions without the least hint of slip. It was amazing to see Hemalatha's face during the tani, obviously taking on board, appreciating, and really enjoying every stroke and calculation. Sri Sudarshan is obviously a master of laya and calculation too: all four artists on stage seemed as completely involved in the tani as they were in any other part of the concert.
Very much looking forward to seeing Adoor Sri. Sudarshan again. Many thanks to those that invited him here, and arranged both concerts.

Good to hear that Shri. Jayaraman is still remembered and appreciated.
With due respect to the artistes, should they not insist on their ideal volume level? If they do not receive any feedback on stage, they must excuse themselves from singing at such acoustically challenged halls or impress upon the organisers the importance of optimum sound levels. It is in their own interests to provide an atmosphere where their artistry is brought to the fore; anything less will see time pass them by.
Perhaps we rasikas should start a movement to ensure good audio quality. Walk out en masse when the quality is unacceptable. Any takers?
