Sugunas Varadachari Purushothaman: A Different Duet

Post by Nick H »

14 September 2010, Sri Thyaga Brahma Gana Sabha – Srijayanthi Music Festival, Vani Mahal

I was hoping that someone would post a review of this concert, so that I could just add my few subjective words to the thread. Request to Sri Nageswaran, please, to post the song list and his comments.

I can't let the concert go, however, without some comment on the site, because it was one of those programmes that was a new experience for me. There were some interesting comments on duet singing and its limitations, a few months ago, on this site. In my experience, the regular combinations consist either of one main performer plus support, or of a joint presentation so slick that, actual siblings or not, the impression of continual playing, practice and performing together is given. This performance could not be pigeon-holed into any such category: it was, simply, two great artists making music together.

Fellow rasikas will be very familiar with these two ladies, possibly for a long time. I have only been introduced to them recently, and have them seen them individually just a very few times. Seeing them together in this wonderful co-operation (on thing that struck me during the concert was the absolute lack of any competition on the stage) was a great experience.

How's this for a week in music? R. Vedavalli, Suguna Purushothaman, Suguna Vadachari so far, and, tomorrow: Neela Ramgopal :)

Nick,
Your 'two great artistes making music together' says it all! I have heard them individually, but haven't had the chance yet to hear them together.

Dear Rasikas,

I am not as fast as Mr. Nick in posting letters in the Rasikas. Org web site.

I have to give a full report about the duet concert of Smt. Suguna Purushothaman and
Suguna Varadachari at Vani Mahal on 14.09.2010.

As a prelude, I am reproducing the E-mail sent to them as the first information.

The E-Mail message is;

Respected Madams Suguna Purushothaman and Suguna Varadachari,

The Vocal duet concert of yours at Vani Mahal was very asthetic, and very educative one for me.

The immeasurable value of Sampradaya music handed over to both of you by the
Late Sri Musiri Subramanya Iyer was very evident one.

The Visranthi music in your concert has taken me in to a meditative mood.

I had to search the Music Dictionary of Sri Lakshman Ragade, who had indexed near about 45, 000 songs with the song name, Ragam, Thalam, and Composer to know the correct
Author of the following songs which I have not listened to for the past 5 decades.

1. Swamikku Sari Evere Chandra vadanan Sri Krishna in Kedaragoulam Rupakam Sivan.

2. Rasa Vilasa Lolo lasati Bhavam deva in Kambhoji Adi by Svathi Thirunal.

3. Nee sari velpula in Arabhi by Tiruvotriyur Thyagaiyyar [This information was given by you].

The 3rd song is not available in Lakshman Ragade’s Dictionary and the concert guide on songs issued in every December Music season.

I am attaching the Music Dictionary compiled by Sri Lakshman Ragade for your use.

You may kindly write to Sri Lakshman Ragade of the songs composed by you with full lyrics and if possible the notation for the songs composed by you so that proper reference will be available to all the music Rasikas.

I look forward to listen to more of your music in the coming months.

With best regards,

S.NAGESWARAN.
