Name 10 Carnatic Musicians you heard live that impressed you

Post by MaheshS »

This is a quiz and I hope it's entertaining.

Name 10 Carnatic Musicians, that you have heard live that have impressed / made you feel in awe / enjoyed / understood / accepted / any strong emotion ... most!

Rules:

1. You should have heard this person LIVE. Heard a live concert recording is NOT accepted, the excuse is as poor as the homework not done because of Y2K bug.

2. The ORDER does not matter, person 1 in the list is not better than 10.

3. You can give a two line description of about the person [if not known widely], why you like / dis-like, or leave it empty, for some artists you do not need to say more, for example MDR, who would be in my list but for Rule 1.

4. Yes, I know some people in the forum, can list about 40 different people and still maintain ALL are the best. But, pick your TOP 10.

Humble Request - Please do not comment / commend / criticise others' choice.

Cool,

You are short by one artist.. #1 and #10 are the same artist, unless you meant it that way.

Designed that way to indicate it is a vicious circle . A circle that had its origins in the first attempts to give the audience what they want , and ending up connecting with the same , tail

Rule1 eliminates a lot of my favourites, because I just wasn't even born when they used to perform. Oh well, here's my list anyway.

1. T.M. Krishna: His performances are so power packed, but there are such wonderful moments of introspection there as well. Attended quite a few concerts. Have rarely been disappointed. Definitely has something interesting to offer every time.

2. Vijay Siva: I love the soothing nature of his voice and the sincerity with which he performs. I've seen him take the time to improve aspects of his performance each time. He once sang a Kannada piece with mispronounced words. Someone pointed it out to him after the concert. At another concert of his after that, the same piece was sung, but with every word pronounced correctly. To take criticism constructively and to work to improve oneself is a rare quality, from what I have seen atleast.

3. Bombay Jayashri: I have heard her live only once, but it was such a wonderful experience. I shall never forget that RTP in a Kaapi-Behag combo. The raagamaalika swarams were to die for. I really enjoy the calm nature of her music as well.

4. Nityashri Mahadevan: I've heard her a few times, but her recent Unnati concert was when I was really in awe of her. A most delightful dwi-nadai(khanda nadai and tishra nadai) pallavi in Shanmukhapriya. Man, some of that kanakku! She reminded me a lot of DKP Amma then.

5. Aruna Sairam: I know that I'm going to get a lot of flak for this, but I do think she is one of the best. And no, it is not because of her tukkudas. I love her manodharma swarams more than anything. I think her voice has a good texture too. I've heard her live only once. During that, I was in awe of her Kharaharapriya and her viruttam followed by Bhaagyaada Lakshmi, from the last charanam of which she sang her famous/infamous Ashtalakshmi raagamaalika.

6. Malladi Brothers: Such exemplary performers. Their clarity, diction etc. are all top notch. Heard them live only once, but it was enough to completely bowl me over. Their Simhendra Madhyamam is one of the best I've heard.

7. M.S. Sheela: She's just pure classicism. Her strict adherence to her guru's (Sri. R.K.Srikanthan) teachings are something I can really appreciate. Recently heard the most excellent Kalyani (this coming from a guy who doesn't like the raagam very much) from her.

8. P.Unnikrishnan: I think he's a singer who has put in a lot of hard work to become what he is. There is a lot of bhaavam in his raaga aalaapanais. I have thoroughly enjoyed the raagams he has elaborated on, be it a Hamsanaadam or a Purvi Kalyani or a somber(in a good way) Shubhapantuvarali.

9. S. Sowmya: One of THE BEST female singers out there, period. A fine torchbearer of Carnatic music. Standouts from her for me were her Shreeranjani and a Todi RTP.

10. Jayanthi Kumaresh(veena): I attended a lecture demonstration of hers while I was still only starting to appreciate carnatic. The impact that had on me was phenomenal. It was the first time I understood the bhaavam behind some of the raagams, and why they're sung/played the way that they are. Will always remember it.

Special mention:
Priya Sisters: Theirs was the first live concert I ever attended as a child. They sparked my interest in carnatic music. So, thanks to them!

1. Madurai Somu: a four hour mesmerisng concert emotion packed
2.Sanjay Subramanyam: several concerts, rarely disappointed
3. K. V. Narayanswamy: several concerts, enjoyed his rakthi filled singing
4. M.S. Gopalakrishnan: Brilliant violin play; several concerts
5.M. D. Ramanathan: drowned in his calm slow music
6.Chitra Veena Ravikiran: chaste bhava laiden music
7.Bombay Jayashri: Krishna Gana sabha Dec 2008; soul stirring RTP
8.M. Balamurali Krishna in 1978: Music Academy
9. D. K. Jayaraman: a devout performer
10.Maharajapuram Santhanam: singing with gusto

These stand out among the many I have heard

As usual a cryptic post from you, Coolji...
I have outstanding recordings from all of the above which I cherish dearly . Pillangovia of the 80s by Aruna , a rare shanmukhapriya by OS arun which has all the adventurous spirit of a GNB , Rajesh Vaidya's masterly exposition of Krishna Nee Begane Baro , RK Suryanarayan's concert for a Pillayar temple in Mylapore in 1982, Ganesh Kumaresh in their Lalgudiesque days , U Srinivas's brilliant tango with N Ramani and so many more
My feelings are only directed towards the waste of potential at the altar of catering to an unsuspecting audience.

On a Serious note :
1.and.2 DKJ and KVN
I may not see things as magical again , as the above two singing in the company of great Violin and Mridangam Vidwans.
Nothing else comes even close to the spirit that pervaded the halls when they sang. The Gods would descend when they sang.
3-4-5 Solos of Lalgudi , MSG and TNK
I have never seen a concert sagging or which was not upto the mark - incredible talent was always on show , leaving me transfixed for hours after. All the three , in their own respective ways.
6. Balmurali - One who has not heard him live has missed something in life .
7. L Sankar on his double Violin at Academy in this 80s . I dont think anyone has extracted more from that instrument in terms of range of emotions.
8. S Balchander in a morning concert where he played Rag Lalith for over 90 minutes. Those big palms stretching and straining to prove a point .
9.TNS on so many occasions.
and
10. Thanjavur Sankara Iyer of the 80s when I was his neighbour . Dismissive ( of the trends then ) , petulant at times , Hurt at not being recognised for what he was worth , he would rather sing for me - a lone neighbour with a quizzical look , a master of the two genres of HM and CM like no one else, a sensitive Veena Player . And some one who knew all those branches where the ripest of musical fruits hung from .

Wow !!! These Guys were ones who told us how good CM could be !!!

MLV SSI TMT and MSS - all - I heard them after their prime . Those sessions made me sad about the way with our bodies .
Which will all decay into nothing some day. :(

Rule 1 definitely makes it interesting! I add my favourite concert of each of the favourites mentioned below.

1. TNK - San Diego 2005 - the concert that singularly revived my interest in CM after 10 years of dormancy
2. Parassala Ponnammal - San Diego 2008 - what a brilliant and moving performance; her vAcaspati, sAvEri, tOdi, nIlAmbari, dwijAvanti, and hindOLavasantam haunt me still (thankfully, have the recording for physical evidence!)
3. Malladi Brothers - MA 2008 - brilliant kAmbOji and simmhEndramadhyamam
4. TMK - Parthasarathy Swami Sabha 2007 - an outstanding mAnji, with RKSK's equally brilliant response; TMK has fallen off my list for both musical and nonmusical reasons now
5. Vijay Siva - San Diego 2010 - what a jambUpatE! I listen to it time and time again still
6. Sanjay - Vani Mahal 2008 - once in a lifetime cArukEsi
7. Hyderabad Brothers - San Diego 2009 - first half of the concert was just amazing, with cAyAtarangini and malahari and kannaDagowLa
8. Trichur Ramachandran - San Diego 2010 - neraval at nIladIra carIra in bAlagOpAla still rings in my ears; still waiting for the recording to listen to it a hundred times over!
9. Injikudi Subramaniam - San Diego 2010 - first nAdaswaram concert, and a unique concert in that his music has affected me more after the concert; I still hear his AbhEri and dES - once again, waiting for recording! And what a teliyalEru rAma
10. Neyveli Santanagopalan - San Diego 2009 - an excellent concert from start to finish; I have been listening to NSG all the way from 2005 and am an ardent fan

San Diego features a fair bit! Maybe it's less artiste oriented and more locale oriented!

1. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer - Was fortunate to have gone to his concerts atleast in the last years of his life.
2. Lalgudi Jayaraman - Thanks to Bharat Kalachar again.
3. KVN - All that is pure and pristine in CM. Listening to KVN's music shall wash away our sins.
4. N.Ramani - Genius unparalled. So many unforgetable concerts i was lucky to catch this maestro live in the last 15 yrs.
5. N.Ravikiran - I still remember one of his rare vocal concerts @ the old R.R.Sabha premises where he sang exclusive oothukkadu Venkatakavi krithis. Spell binding stuff.
6. UKS - A divine blessing to the world of percussion. puNyA acquired in my previous birth enabled me to study under the maestro for over a decade and enjoy his genius for last 15 yrs..
7. Trichy Sankaran - There can only be one kAlidAsa, one vAlmiki and one Trichy Sankaran.
8. Kanjira.G.Harishankar - I ncarnation of Lord NandikEshwarA. Finds a place in the Pooja room of all students of percussion till now and for generations to come. So many unforgettable concerts i have sat through just for his presence on the stage with top mrudangam vidwans.
9. Smt.R.Vedavalli - As i read somewhere, "The oasis, to whom the cognoscenti shud look up in order to quench their thirst for authentic classicism"
10. MSG - Matchless control and mastery over the instrument. Lucky to catch up with lot of his solos. The nalinakAnthis, mohanams, sindhu bhairavis etc.... unparalled !!!!

Alas if not for the rule, i would have included DKJ, MDR, Alathoor bros, GNB and MMI whom i was not fortunate enough to listen live.

1. M S Subbulakshmi: pure, perfect. Thank God I could hear her live concert.
2. Emani Sankara Sastri: That tug at the heart! Those pearl-like notes dropping from the veena! Aaah! Incomparable.
3. Mali: Expect the unexpected turn of phrase. Enjoy the true purity of flute. Wallow in the chouka phrases. Delight in the mischievous patterns!
4. S Balachander: Amazing capability to make the rarest raga attractive! Ayyo! Neethimathi, Rishabhapriya! And scores more. Made me yearn to learn them, and I did too.
5. Lalgudi Jayaraman: Rasippu all the way!
6. T Viswanathan and Balasaraswati (Flute and Bharatanatyam): MA 1973 Dec. Unforgettable improvisation, neraval by Vishwa , dance reply (on the spot) with vocal simultaneously by Bala, finally Bala sings neraval way up in the upper octave, to which Vishwa comments 'nee angey ellaam paadinaa naa eppadi vaasikkarudu?' THAT was real kalpana sangeetam, the essence of Carnatic music
7. Voleti Venkateswarulu: That eka raga sabha in Begada, at Bangalore Gayana Samaj - after that, one felt there was nothing left to explore in Begada
8. Dr M Balamuralikrishna: Captivating performances. Great voice range and quality, easy delivery regardless of the difficulty of the raga or tala, perfect sahitya enunciation. His concerts are highly technical with rare raga and tala combinations, perfectly camouflaged as 'easy listening'!
9. M L Vasantakumari: Those brigas, and those impromptu pallavis. Heart-stopping.
10. K V Narayanaswami: The first and only person to make me appreciate Keeravani.

There are musicians whom I have heard just once like voleti, there are musicians whom I have heard 4 or 5 times like KVN , certainly they did not give their best in those live concerts that I heard , but nevertheless when I extrapolate their musical worth to recordings they are just wonderful.

1. maharajapuram santhanam
2. KV Narayanaswami
3. Suryaprakash
4. VijaySiva
5. TN SeshagOpAlan

6. Lalgudi Jayaraman - violin
7. Voleti venkataswarulu
8. Sanjay Subrahmanyan
9. Rajee GopAlakrishnan
10. TM KrishnA

I had an oppurtunity to hear once prof TRS ,which I did not grab when I went to delhi. I have heard madurai somu singing once , but I dont recollect only my parents recollect, hence I am passing him too . BTW I have heard just once semmangudi mAmA speaking, I wish if he had sung one line atleast pavamAna then i would have put him right at the top. But unfortunately I was not even born when gAnakalAdhara madurai mani iyer was living :( .

Instead of saying they did not give their best in the limited concerts that you attended, it would be more apt to say/rather ponder that your knowledge has improved. Applying the same Ariyakudi comment ;)

Will we ever se musicians of such calibre again ?

4. Flute KSG - @ Mumbai Bharatiya concert in the late 90's. heard him for the first time.. was spellbound

More than the title name of the thread, the "conditions " that applied thereof were impressive.

Alathur Srinivasa Iyer ( though the duo is my favourite, I can only say his name as the other brother I have only heard thru recs., which is against the thread rule)
M D Ramanathan
D K Pattamal / D K Jayaraman (individually)

Ever classy musicians
1. Mrs.Vedavalli– Her knowledge and her explanations are just Woow.
2. Mr.TN Seshagopalan – One need not give any explanation about this legend.
3. Mrs. Sudha Ragunathan – her briga’s and flawless kanaku while rendering RTP and swaram is something that is astounding, Best RTP’s of Sudha (2009 MA Misra Nadai, 2004 KGS- Chatsura Ragam pallavi, 2009- Tri raga pallavi, the list goes on) One musician in Carnatic music who can present an entire concert is any style of Carnatic music(DKP amma, Semmagudi mama, style so on). As far as I know she is one of the best versatile singers. She is a true head turner.
4. Mr.Sanjay Subramanian – His creativity. He is NOT a wannabe like any other male musician.
5. Malladi Brothers – Right talent and hard work never goes unnoticed.. BEST example
6. Mrs.Sowmya – Love song selections. Off course her smartness plays greater role.
7. Mrs. Sangeetha Swaminathan – Her creativity and her flawless rtp’s .

Now funny people who impress me when I am bored
1. This man is a complete joker. I don’t want to name him. He might cry/yell after looking at this posting. He is one perfect hypocrite, wannabe, talks all stupid stuff only. He has tones of students who promote his name on all forums. All he needs to do is give some time for him to grow up.
2. This female artist is perfect funny woman who does only PR these days. Her unique concepts are blood suckers. No thalam, No manodarma , Few tears on stage keeps her as cynosure of Carnatic music. Crowd puller(Watchman till her relatives are always there to fill the auditorium)
3. She is a dabbling artiste. This female needs to know the reason why she uses Sruthi box first. All she needs to know is learn music from basics and climb the stage. No one replies to her threads in Rasika’s. Her Tv shows are aweful

I guess the last three are also part of the 10 C Musicians that impressed you! But the problem is, without a name , we can fit in dozens of artists in each of the three categories :)

Alright folks, this thread has been going on fine without any controversy. Let us maintain that. namrutha.srini, that addendum is not necessary in this thread. Thanks.

Here goes my list:

1. Sudha Ragunathan: Definitely one of the most versatile artist performing in this era. Her 2001 concert in Mumbai was one of her best I believe where she sung an amazing poorvi kalyani and also suddha saveri.

2. T. N Seshagopalan: Too young to even talk about this genius. I can write pages about his concerts.

3. Maharajapuram Santhanam: I was too young when I attended his concerts. But his stature on stage still remains fresh in my mind.

4. Lalgudi Jayaraman: Another genius whose madhyamavatis and shankarabharanams are a treat to listen

5. Sanjay Subrahmanyam: One of the most creative artist around. His attitude on stage is what I like the most. Just take the plunge :)

6. Nedunuri Krishnamurthy: Like TNS, Santhanam I am too small to talk about his music. I just yearn to attend more of his concerts.

7. E Gayathri: She has been my idol since I started learning the instrument.

8. Malladi Brothers: No nonsense attitude approach to their concert

9. R Vedavalli: Never has she disappointed me

10. Smt Sowmya

Unfortunately would have loved to attended concerts of GNB, MLV, MS, Semmangudi, MMI, KVN etc.. This one is a long list

@namrutha.srini: Too many can musicians fit in your category. Just name the musicians. And as vasanthakokilam said, lets not make this a controversial thread. The Ayodhya verdict is only tomm so don't start a riot today ;)

I am not going to name any senior musicians (will limit to 40+ or less) because they've been in this field for so long because of the "impressiveness" - among other things - of their music.

I do not remember individual concerts that well, somehow, but do remember being impressed by musicians. I cannot arrange them in an order either, so I just name them here:

1. Sangeetha Sivakumar
2. Amritha Murali (yes, of course both vocal and violin)
3. S Varadarajan
4. T M Krishna
5. R K Shriram Kumar
6. J B Sruthi Sagar (though the impressiveness is waning of late)
7. Ranjeeth Warrier (a vocalist -- very good one, many here may not be knowing!)
8. Ramakrishnan Murthy
9. Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi
10. Most vainikas ... to mention one, Srividya Chandramowli (a vainika of the Karaikudi style). I'll forever remember her concert with accompanied by her sons (Kapila on the veena and his younger brother on the tambura) and Trichur Sri Narendran.

What a nice topic! taking us to a nostalgic trip. I am only listing those singers/instrumentalists who just mesmerised me with their music and stage presence. I think we need to have one more thread for violinists as accompanists and mridanga / kanjira vidwans.
1. DKJ, many great concerts including his SK concert at MA
2. BMK an unforgettable panchamukhi pallavi in kalyani
3. MSS (one concert at BVB, sublime music, divine experience!)
4. Nedunuri (almost all chennai concerts since 1990), every concert was a great experience!
5. TVS [since 1984, enjoyed his charukesi, thodi, lathangi, panthuvarali (where is the ragam hiding now a days?)]
6. TNS
7. KVN [His concerts at Ram Samaj, Ayodhya mantapam with UKS! what a combination!]
8. Lalgudi (TRIO with Karaikudi Mani)
9. U Srinivas (at MFAC, Dec 25th every year with Kanyakumari and Trichy Shankaran, till 2002)
10. Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer (with Lalgudi Krishnan and UKS) at KGS in 1990s. After the first song he said"en vayasukkaarala paakardhe kashtam, naan paada vera vandhirukken, chumma chumma kai thattaadheengo" ( Do not applause for each song as it is hard to even see people of my age and i have come here to sing!). After couple of songs, he removed his "artificial teeth (pall set)" and had a snuff and said "ippathaan vasadhiyaa irukku! (only now am feeling comfortable)". He sang thaanam in Shankarabharanam to the accompaniment of UKS, i felt that this man is ageless!"

Yes, I have also not heard him live. However as a child I heard his AIR performances. His recordings on youtube and the Kamalambha Nava Varna CD are so divine that you feel spiritually elevated while listening to them.

DKJ-MSG-UKS at Ayodhya Mantapam
I was fortunate to hear such combinations , live . The Location , The crowd , And DKJ .....
One great thing about his concerts always was that the standard of accompanists used to be top class.

musicdazzler,
In your post # 30, you say: MLV accompanied by my father--which vidwAn is your father? Is he a violinist or does he play the mrudangam?
