Re: Breathing speed
I am not a vocalist and I have not really thought about the above issue much until you raised the question.
Here is my thinking from a theoretical point of view. Vocalists, please pitch in.
I think 80 1-kaLai beats per minute is a good pace to base this calculation on. For a different purpose, I measured this over a number of songs by a variety of singers and the number converges around this 80 number.
So if you can sing a single note in a Karvai for 6 seconds, you have enough breathing capacity for one 1-kaLai avarthana of Adi
It is probably a good goal to to strive for 28-30 seconds so that you have enough for 4 1-kaLai avarthana( or 2 2-kaLai avarthana ) plus some head room.
What this means is, if the pUrvAnGa of a varnam consists of 4 2-kaLai avarthanams, it can be sung with taking 3 brathing points. Beginning, Middle and End.
In second speed, you should be able to finish it with such 2 breathing points. Beginning and End with no in between breathing points etc.
The above is just something I made up. If that is difficult or too easy, scale down or scale up accordingly.
RTP is probably a little bit less demanding in the breathing department in one sense: You have the arudhi point which is a nice point to breath in the necessary air for the next couple of avarthas.
