Nivedita Narayanan for Bharathiya Vidya Bhavan on 12th Oct

Post by padmarajagopal »

My second concert of Nivedita after last December. I attended with some expectation and she exceeded them with her performance. It was a very powerful performance. She brought so much enthusiasm to the stage and enjoyed herself while singing. Her accompanists were very enthusiastic in playing. I especially liked the mridangist. Nice team work.

Her first song was in Nattai ragam, saraseeruhasanapriye, announced as composition of Puliyur Duraisami Iyer. In that piece, she put swarams in charanam line ‘saraswathi’ and finished with a nice korvai. Then next piece was Oothukkadu Venkatasubbaiyer’s Kamakshi navavarnam Bhajaswa shri tripurasundari. The piece was sung in emotive manner with good shruti shuddham and good mix of slow and fast pace. Next was dharmasamvardhani in madhyamavathi. She sang the pallavi and anupallavi slowly and picked up speed in charanam. In charanam, there was one surprise. In the line, ‘paadaja vishva vilasini’ she did neraval. It was short and crisp and enjoyable. Then she followed it with swarams. Violinist Dileep also played brisk swarams here. Next song was ennai nee maravaade, in amrithavarshini. Main piece was a kriti I have not heard before-ninnuvina gathigana, in Kalyani, announced as composition of Subburaya Shastri. Tani by mridangist Shylender was excellent and I really enjoyed it. After main piece, first song was the popular kriti himagiri thanaye. Next was a long and beautiful ragamalika song on ashtalakshmi, announced as composition of Ravikiran. Concluding piece was nenjukku neediyum.

Overall, her voice looks even more mellifluous now. Very beautiful and weighty at the same time. I really enjoyed the concert. It had the classical stamp of her school. Hope this young girl reaches heights in future.

I heard this number Bhajaswa shri tripurasundari in nAdanAmakriyA for the very first time only a month back when I attended suryaprakAsh concert . This number is really superb and is really a top notch composition. Did nivedita sing a neraval or swaras there.
